BMW 318i E90 2006.... brakes applying on their own?

    I replaced front discs and pads and rear pads and wear sensors on my daughters car. Test drove fine. She said that about an hour into her journey the brakes started coming on without her touching the pedal. When it starts it keeps doing it apparently.

    I haven't got the car yet to test. Has anyone got any ideas what might cause this? Thanks.

    Could they be seizing a bit? Does alloys get hot?
    Try taking them apart again and make sure all is moving freely.

    I will have to check, won't have the car for a week or so. I think when TCS kicks in the amber light flashes in the dash but there was no mention. I guess it might be a gradual build up of heat and then it really binds.

    I did use the cheap option parts... Eurobrake... whether that makes any difference?

    No, it all went surprisingly well. No problem pushing pistons back on any of the calipers.

    I did remove some fluid from the reservoir as it was overfull by the time I was getting to the last corner, even though I was pumping brake home after each corner. I figure it may have been topped up sometime and now that all corners being replaced...

    I didn't notice any leading edge on pads to suggest you could fit them wrong.

    I guess I will test drive the car and see what is happening and if there is a corner getting hot. Logistical pain, I am in Limerick and car is in Dublin... and then can I drive it back to Limerick which I would prefer...I'm not really equipped to be a mobile mechanic :D ... or any sort you might say :rolleyes:

    From memory, I think there is an inner and outer of the rear pads, which may not be immediately obvious. The inner one has a bit more of a "hump" at the top. If these are fitted the wrong way round, they can cause the pad to stick as it cannot release freely. It is also possible that the two "inner" pads are fitted on one side. The pads will "fit", but if fitted incorrectly the caliper actually catches the "hump" of the then outer pad, when it is tightened causing it to be held tight to the disc.

    Either way, if they are fitted as described above, it could cause your symptoms, which would get worse as they heat up.

    You'll know there's a problem if there is heat on one of the discs and also, it may be showing a purple colour.

    Now that I think of it the sensor was not as snug a fit as you would expect., I put it down to cheap pads as sensor was OE ATE part... so I reckon you are bang on. Thanks, will report back.

    Yes, the DSC system was kicking in and lighting up on the dash intermittently. Then I was driving the car on the M50 over to Valdas in Motor Confidence when DSC and ABS fault came on, so basically dash is lit up like a Christmas tree.

    Reluctor rings common fault on this car at this age. 2 x Reluctor rings and 1 X wheel speed sensor (if that what it called) and all fixed. €305 at Motor Confidence. Thanks all for input.
