Along with those who drive with bald tyres and no insurance.

No, to be fair, you get a driving ban which I think is punishment enough. Not to mention the insurance problems after that.

Not sure what the re offending stats are on drink driving but I'd bet they are low.

I think the modern equivalent of putting people in stocks to be pelted with entrails and rotten fruit would create more difficulties than it would solve. That went out of style for good reason. DUI is already a serious criminal offence, and is punished accordingly. I'd file this under "We must do Something. This is Something. Therefore, we must do this!".

    What you,s think?

It has been proven multiple times that harsh punishment does not reduce the violation rate. It is only the inevitability of the punishment, even a milder one, that makes the difference.

More testing on the spot and the rate will dramatically go down.

So we can get a live viewable register for drink driving but not for sex offenders? I'd much prefer a public register for sex offenders. They have it in the USA and it is frightening to browse. Towns and cities are literally riddled with sex offenders.

Driving with D plates for 2 years after offence would be a proper punishment, public shaming to the max.

D plates would work for that, wouldn't be waved through a checkpoint

It is enough to pee in a wrong place when you're 19. Public exposure - you're on the list...

    I live in a densely populated area - yet I haven't seen a checkpoint...

    Doesn't make sense to me.
Publicating list of people caught drink driving - what would it change?
It could only make a difference if people would be ashamed of driving driving.

And as drink driving is fully socially acceptable (here in the west at least) there's nothing the be ashamed about.

Can you drive drunk with those plates?
I meet a checkpoint about twice a year, waved through as car and documentation is in order. The only time I was stopped was to check for illicit diesel. I blew into the bag once after a minor road accident.
D plated will only work if the guards follow up on it. They are currently turning a blind eye to the local drunk drivers who everyone knows.

Yes and you will then have the attention of every single driver and member of the public who sees the car with the D plate.

Yeah, but that is only if they are displayed. I can't foresee too many people displaying them. The point I am making is that if your documentation is in order, there is little chance of a checkpoint interacting with you. I am driving for thirty years and have only interacted with the guards or customs at a diesel dipping checkpoint and a minor accident. The drink drivers that we all know and love so much don't give a crap. They will most likely not display the plates.
