Gatso van not in designated safety zone

    Hi,

Was wondering if anybody can tell me if Gatso vans are allowed to operate outside of the marked safety locations on the Garda website. If not what would be the best way to make a complaint about this be and to who?

I passed a Gatso van tonight by power city in Blanch. Never seen one there before so checked the Garda safety camera locations online and it wasn't at one of the marked locations on the map. The Ongar distributor road was marked as a new location but the Gatso was further down past the roundabout and definitely wasn't marked on the map as a location. Totally unnecessary location for speed cameras and obliviously just there for the easy catches which bugs the hell out of me.

    Any thoughts appreciated.

Garda vans can park anywhere and are usually not well marked, usually a bit of reflective stripe and Garda written on it. GoSafe can only operate in the zones, even they are a joke, and are fully signed. GoSafe have survey vans which aren't marked and can park anywhere but don't enforce speed limits.

This was definitely a go safe. blue and yellow markings on the side. Picture of the camera etc. Went back around to get some pics and a video.

If it's catching some people speeding well it sounds like it's in the right location.

Might be a go safe survery van. Checking speed but not issuing fines and points.

A lot of very bad driver behaviour in that location to be fair. Lose count how many times I see undertaking (in the bus lane) on the Ongar Rd, general disregard for the (admittedly fairly low) speed limit of 60kph, drivers using the bus lane continuously to avoid traffic queues on the driving lane, and a fair chunk of daily amber gambling with any of the 4 sets of traffic lights on the road.

The roundabout at PowerCity can be a real gamble at times - folks hurtling from Blanch SC straight through this roundabout at high speed from the left-turn-only lane, failure to stop at the pedestrian lights on the Clonsilla Rd side of the roundabout, once more undertaking at speed in the bus lane.

They should consider leaving a Go Safe van there permanently to be honest.

Agree with what your saying about the Ongar road and the roundabout. Wouldn't have a problem with one monitoring that road but this wasn't monitoring the Ongar road. It was further down past the roundabout on that very short stretch just after the Ongar road which isn't marked as one the safety zones.
If the Ongar road is one of there safety zones is that not were they should be? It just seems to me they've set up further down for easier catches. Also not sure what the speed limit is for that stretch as there are no signs. Could be a lower limit were there likely to catch more people.

What I really want to know is are they allowed to be outside there designated safety zones at all or anyone have any experience with that before?

    Thanks

The answer is yes they can legally operate anywhere inside and outside the zones, generally however they don't. Operating inside the zones is Garda policy - nothingn more.

Hello, garda? There's a speed van around Dublin 15 out to catch those bloody blighters speeding. It's just not cricket old man, they never sent me a letter telling me where I can or cannot speed in this area.

This has to be a piss take.

I may be wrong but I think the red triangle designates it as a survey vehicle.

So from your long list of dangerous and reckless driving offences you think that the solution is to only prosecute only one of them. You can happily drive past a GoSafe van p1ssed up on the phone in the bus lane without any consequences. Would it not be better to put a Garda there and prosecute all the offences you listed?

No... that triangle just says that it is a manned vehicle.
( human inside is not fire proof )

    Edit.

    Definitely a garda van.

The GoSafe vans are blue and orange on the side.
Garda vans (if marked) are blue and yellow

No, GoSafe come in all colors. White mainly but there is a few red, blue and green ones. Mostly Renault and Ford vans.
