The Sound of Soot!

Have an inset stove and quite often (maybe once/twice a day) I can hear what sounds like soot falling down, from the chimney I presume. The thing is I don't know where it is falling to and it's obviously building up somewhere.

I'd sometimes have soot fall down into an open fire in my old place but it would be cleaned out with the ashes. I don't like the sound of it building up somewhere. Is it normal?

when did you last clean the chimney.
it should be cleaned twice a year

It was cleaned a few months ago. The cleaning isn't the issue. It's the soot falling down in small amounts that's the issue. Hopefully someone can help.

    Are you sure it's soot?

a neighbour of mine had this problem. she didn't clean the chimney for a few years (bone idol BF)
I took over doing it and clean it twice a year. I cleaned times but couldn't take off all the soot that built up in those few years. I got her to get a chimney cleaner in with one of those spinning tools . it shaved all the soot off the flue . problem solved.

    brushes aren't enough

cleaning may not be the issue but something is not quite right if you have a soot build up again after a few months

is your chimney lined with a suitable liner for solid fuel stoves

    that's a good point jim.
if there is a flexi pipe fitted the soot will fall off it easily.

op could you post a pic of the soot that is falling. the shape etc could help explain it

As I say "I can hear what sounds like soot" falling. It happens at random, sometimes when the fire is lighting, sometimes when it is not. Just a small fall, its sounds like a small bit of soot. I can't see it or have no idea what it looks like. I don't remember hearing it when the fire wasn't lighting.

    Could be creosote flaking off

I opened up the stove and there was only a very small amount of soot after falling down. It obviously just sounds like a lot more when it hits the stove.
I have no idea what's causing it but on that evidence there won't be any need to open it again outside of chimney cleaning intervals.

    Thanks all.
