Walked out of work due anxiety & depressed? Now lost my job

    Hi All,

A couple of weeks ago i walked out of work due to anxiety and feeling very, very low. Every day heading into work i was depressed and had no motivation to work or talk to anyone.

I now have lost my job as i could not explain my absence. For three days i switched the phone off and had no contact with them. When i eventually contacted the company, we ended up having an argument and i was basically told not to come back. I am very disappointed, i know i should have talked to someone at work, but i was too depressed, and to be honest, how work was treating me was a contribute to my anxiety.

I am now at home, and have very low self esteem and no motivation at all, i don't know what to do. I was thinking of asking for my job back, and explaining to them why it has been getting me down, maybe a few improvements or a change at work could help?

I also in the past had an alcohol problem, which i have had under control, i have been 8 months off alcohol, but a couple of weeks ago it was close, i was nearly back on it..i dont want to go back to that life again..

    Thanks

How long were you working there?

Go to your GP. sort out some payment from social welfare . look after yourself. Look into doing a course with the likes of the National Learning Network. If your anxiety was as bad as you say going straight back into a stressful work environment may not be in your best interests.Good luck

OP, when you get into a state like that you NEED to go to your doctor. No if's, but's or maybes. They may be able to help sort out work - though I doubt it by this time.

Get the health sorted, and then good luck with the job hunting.

Get registered as unemployed with social welfare, (apply for medical card).
Talk to your gp. Heed their advice.
This is a tough position to be in but it sounds like you are better off with some time away from work (I understand there may be financial pressures).
    Good luck.

    your health is most important.
tell your employer. there's nothing to be ashamed of at all.
work is a small part of life. if you are down from it take a break and don't beat yourself up.

Hi all, thank you all for the comments. I really appreciate it all. I have taken on board all you have said. I also contacted my employer and explained to them. Thanks

Depends on how good the job was for you. If it was part of the problem then you may be better off out of it.

Your main problem at the moment seems to be your mental health and I'd highly recommend you go to a doctor as soon as possible....go tomorrow.

If you are to get in touch with your employers I would get in touch with HR rather than a manager or the like. Speak to your GP first and be as honest as possible. I've been in that situation before, you've nothing to lose and everything to gain. Once you've spoken to your GP you can go to HR and explain what you've been through. They'll be familiar with the do's and don'ts and given the legal issues around this area they might give you another go and put a plan together. That's if you're willing to go back. Don't hang around.

Now is your chance to own your future. It's all upside from here on.

How long were you in the job? If it was over 2 years they can't just sack you without proper procedures?

you could probably argue that walking out without explanation , making no effort to contact your employer and refusing to answer the phone is tantamount to quitting.
    Silver lining
It sounds like the job was part of the problem and you are well out of it.
Good luck in finding something that suits you better

However if you abandon the employment, which is what the OP did, different rules some into play.

Best route is to forget the legals and negotiate. But get the health sorted first. Without it, you're useless for any job.
