I was thinking of getting one of these. I do long journeys Donegal - Dublin every week. I would be looking at a 2013 upwards and getting a 2.0 hdi.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank

I had two, they are a fantastic car and great value.

the 2.0 is just as economical as the 1.6 and a great drive.

One of mine had 120,000 miles on it and still drove perfectly. A much underrated car.

    Go for it.

Hardly broken in at 120,000 miles. Some people have no concept of what milage an engine can do.

The 508's are well improved on the 407's....Saying that the 407 had a hard act to follow after super reliable 406's....

The 407 earth canbus errors and failing abs sensors/lower ball joint/heater flap failures/turbo failure on 1.6 hdi (if not serviced) put a damper on the 407's but Peugeot seem to get here act together after there 407 issues...:)

Saying that the later 407's (2009+) seem pretty reliable...

In 2011 Peugeot drifted away from the 1.6 hdi (16 valve) engines to a 8 valve 1.6 hdi based on the 1.4 hdi which is (a bulletproof engine) in the 307's/206's/207's but the improved bhp in 508 outputting a 112/115 bhp.

Some of the 2011 1.6 hdi's had continental fuel systems (like ford etc) which did cause issues with failing injectors but once the went back to Siemens in 2012 these issues were resolved.

O.P. The 2.0 hdi's are a reliable engine with little problems bar Dmf's (like all high mileage diesels) and the odd egr and dpf problems which only tend to show there head over 150k miles onwards.

I have the 140bhp but the 163 bhp would be worth driving to see how they compare..By all accounts the 163 lead the way....

I have a 508 1.6 hdi (Siemens) and a 407 2.0 hdi (Delphi) and both are on a par with mpgs...;) Average 50-52 mpgs

Like richardsheil said the 508's are a underrated car at great value so go for it...:)

    Best of luck..;)

    Ron.

Bumping this. Did you go for it in the end?

I've been looking at changing our Mondeo, with a Passat in mind. I drove one during the week, 140bhp and wasn't impressed at all.

Drove a 140bhp, Active, 508 this evening and loved it! I couldn't believe how much more I liked it compared to the Passat!

    Bumping this.

Going over to the UK in March/April and just wondering how ye fared out.
I'm considering going for 2013 estate version but just wondering if the op is happy with his purchase or if there are any hidden banana skins I should be worried about.

I don't do much mileage so will prefer the petrol version. Just enquiring as to the best engine for the car of this size.
    Thanks.
