Hi, I'm thinking of changing my car and looking at cars locally. A car I like says 110kw in the book but when I checked insurance prices its showing as a 115bhp. The timing belt was just changed and they couldn't get the right one till they ordered one for a 150bhp also. Just wondering why the difference

Does it have a sticker in the boot with info such as engine code kw etc?

It wasn't in the boot but was a sticker on the book I think. I didn't check for a sticker in the boot but can do. The Vin number is on it and gear box codes etc. It was definitely a sticker as I took a picture.

It doesn't appear to be an import as I did one of the free checks that would say if it was an import.
It's also one owner from new and is a 10 year old car if that makes a difference

    What's the reg?

I had a similar issue with mine. They didn't believe such a spec existed in terms of the engine size in the car, had to go all the way to the underwriters for verification and I had to submit the reg forms for the car.

All I'd say OP is cover yourself and verify, vocally and in paperwork as they'll be the very same to deny cover should you have a claim.

Strangely axa seem to have no knowledge of the current vw passat 1.6tdi being 120 bhp compared to last model 1.6 tdi being 105 bhp.
My father attempted to correct this on policy and they basically said computer says no but that they can note that on file.

I had the same ( not with axa )

Computer sadi it was an Octavia 2.0 elegence.
Noted on my file so happy to go with it.

Insurance systems can be a bit weird so if you want to be sure, make sure and tell them that it's 150.

I've seen a few 100bhp Boras & Passats come up as 130bhp 4motions and a friend has an Octavia VRS that comes up as a 2.0 TDI Ambiente. :o

Tell Liberty Insurance that not me :D

They wouldn't believe it was 100bhp FWD and then he gave them a reg of a 130bhp FWD model and they refused to insure it because it was too powerful :D logic!

I am not buying the car now but could give you reg if you still want

I am just really curious about it. The seller is extremely legit.

For the craic I put in the reg of a known 150bhp of a the same type car and aviva refused me an online qoute!

BMW 320/520D must be impossible to insure at that rate, being well over 150hp??

Very much depends on the Clients profile and the insurance company you are dealing with I'd say. Just because the OP couldn't with the insurance provider he went to doesn't mean the same would necessarily be the same for others dealing with the same or different insurance providers or even the OP dealing with different providers. Loads of BMW 320D/ 520D out there on the roads, I'd be shocked if none were covered.

So the BMW thing is a kind of an exclusive club like, the type of scobes who would be refused insurance on a 150bhp VAG wouldn't be left near a 320D I suppose.

Seems legit! It matches up nicely to the "insurance fraud is rampant and very lucrative, we can eradicate it by by making these hardcore fraudsters buy ever so slightly newer cars" thing.

My vRS is the same, about 90% of insurers, and the log book and any history check have it correct (2.0 170hp), but some insurers databases throw it up as a 2.0 Elegance for some reason.

Jeepers, presumably that was meant to be a sarcastic post? Was moreso referring to the power of the car rather than the make and model. Although insurance companies will load premiums for certain makes and models. Which makes and models I have no idea and it does not remain static and would also differ from one provider to the next.

Had same problem when bought my OPC, in 2009, for few years it was insured as GSI/VXR and then OPC special edition before companies recognised it as OPC nurburgring edition around 2012. Even though number plate was right for first 2 years I had insist that I got a letter it was a OPC burg not GSI/VXR as stated in case of a claim.

Systems are behind most likely and have not copped on to a mistake or if its newer models.

Try suggesting that they get it wrong, or they are behind the times on the motor insurance forum!!

General comments like this on the industry are taken as personally belittling them all. Touchy bunch.

I was trying to get a quote on switching an insurance to RX8:
    - what is the engine capacity?!
    - it's 1300 ccm.
    - no such car...
    - weird... It's rotary, so you might have listed it differently... Maybe try 2.6l?!
    - THAT IS NOT THE CAR YOU HAVE. YOU SAID 1.3, SO YOU HAVE 1.3. 2.6 IS NOT WHAT YOU HAVE, WE'LL NOT INSURE
    - escalate me...

They be to afraid of being sued to admit they made a clerical error or that there computers are not up to date, so they kick up fuss and threaten there way out of it, or try at least.
