My wife is an oncologist and has finished her training to become a consultant.
We have been based in the states for the last year and a half and would like to come Ho,e to Dublin but there doesn't seem to be any consultant jobs going.
Is there a hiring/recruitment ban at the moment?
Anyone know when jobs will start becoming available again?

Med onc? There are only 55ish med ins on the specialist register. I wouldn't think more than 2-3 jobs come up every year. All jobs will be on publicjobs.ie. At the moment there are 35 consultant posts being advertised, none in med onc but some in rad onc if that is her speciality.

Yeah, Med Onc. Consensus seems to be that a job won't come up in Dublin for a few years and that would be highly sought after.

There's an oncology job in Letterkenny advertised on BMJ careers I noticed a few days ago. There's a joint NHS/ HSE centre opening in Derry soon. It might be related

That Letterkenny job is on the HSE website too. There is also a 6 month temporary contract between St James and Tullamore on the HSE site. In Dublin a lot of post would be site specific e.g. breast only so you would have to be strategic about who might be retiring and what jobs will be coming up in the future.

If there are so few jobs coming up why are so many consultant roles being unfilled?
Is it because the new contract is so poorly paid?

Most unfilled posts are in psychiatry and emergency medicine. They are unfilled for a variety of reasons not limited to salary - most of those posts are not attractive due to location and understaffing. Plus, I don't think there are hundreds of consultant-ready trainees around to take those posts even if they wanted to.

Nice exaggeration. Third world countries would love to have our system, however imperfect it might be.
