Tourism idea for Waterford

Saw a picture today of people on top of the old Ard Ri hotel. Seems to be just teenagers looking for adventure despite the obvious dangers. But along with the current painting on the hotel front they have just sparked an idea.

The high ground on that side is a perfect perch for either a huge "something" to be viewed from the city, and the opposite a great place to view the city from.

Many cities have something which identifys them, Big Ben in London, Eiffel Tower in Paris, Christ the Redeemer in Rio, The Spire in Dublin. We have a perfect natural spot for something similiar, something that would put us on the map, maybe something related to either our Viking history like a Giant Viking Statue or maybe something related to Waterford Crystal. Something which tourists visiting Ireland must see. Maybe have a proper lookout spot there over the city as well.

Obviously i'm not comparing Waterford directly with any of those huge cities but you get the idea.

The council should buy the site and stick something mega on it. Obviously funding would be an issue but I'm sure it could work.

Silly or interesting idea? It would have to be done right or we could end up being a laughing stock. What would you put up there?

    Funicular railway.

Went on one in europe recently and don't think there's another in Ireland.

Could be incorporated into existing train station.

They should move Reggies over and stick the Clock Tower on top of it.

That's the genius of the idea! We could go for a Mount Rushmore homage featuring the heads of Val Doonican, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Anna Manahan and Hal Roach Robert Boyle

Mount Misery would really live up to its name if that happened

If they reopened it as a hotel and put a cable car that would land around the Clock Tower would be a great tourist attraction. Have the cable car free for guests of the hotel and paid for everybody else. One of the problems with the Ard Ri was it was relatively disconnected from the city centre and guests had the extra expense of getting taxis that you don’t have if you stay in a hotel on the Quay leaving the Ard Ri at a competitive disadvantage. A cable car would solve two problems, create a tourist attraction and connect the site with the city centre.

Turn it into a public park with playground, cafe and outdoor cinema /stage.
Put in some flower gardens and run an annual garden / flower festival.

And for all those who stumbled their way across the bridge, never to return home
