    Hi All

I have a car imported from UK 2 years ago. if I wish to import another car is it possible to register the car in the UK and trade it in over there against a UK car?

I am not moving to the UK? Any advice appreciated. I am getting very poor trade in allowances from dealers over here.

There's a couple of dealers across the boarder advertising they take irish reg'd cars on trade in. Just don't forget about the vrt conversion in the deal you get, it's how they make profit

You will need a UK address to do it, then it will also need an MOT, you will also need to pay for ferry, fuel and tolls getting it over. I'd sell it private here if it was me.

But if he get's it registered in UK, he can get VRT refund, which might be much bigger sum than all expanses you listed, and well worth it.

Yes good point, that may more than cover the expenses.

Check what the VRT rebate is and market value in the UK vs here. With the sterling so weak at the minute it means you might get as much for it in Ireland, depending on the car.

If the sterling trade in price, plus VRT rebate is much higher than than what you would get for it in Ireland, go with that. Because the car was originally in the UK, exporting it should be straightforward and the UK dealer could easily do this for you if they are accommodating.

In theory then, what you would do if trading it in is agree trade in price with a dealer in NI or over on the UK mainland. Then book the car in for VRT export exam. After VRT people examine the car, you will get a letter in the post with the amount of VRT rebate due. Then take the car out of the country, and then you fill out this form and send it to revenue. You should get a refund within a couple of months.

It's obviously more headache than walking into a local showroom, but if it saves you thousands of euros, could well be worth it.
