5) Check for Leaks Letter

Water meters are fitted with a constant flow alarm, which will alert Irish Water if there is an excessive amount of water being used at a property throughout a 48 hour period.

Irish Water will notify metered customers if the water meter for their home indicates that there may be a leak on their property. This notification will provide advice and information on the steps to identify the location of that leak. Customers are asked to complete four simple checks around their home to identify if they have an internal plumbing issue which may be causing the constant flow of water to their property. Customers must:

- Check the toilet for a constant sound of water running from the cistern;
- Check the water storage tank to see if it is refilling when water appliances are not in use;
- Check all household and external taps for drips and
- Check water consuming appliances for plumbing issues such as dripping joints.

After completing these checks, if an internal leak cannot be identified, customers are advised to contact us to request a free leak investigation. We will carry out some simple checks over the phone to determine if we can complete a leak investigation survey.
