So , I had a Pajero Pinin which was taxed and insured privately , i had plans to convert it to a commercial until a silly woman drove into the back of me doin 60km whilst i was stopped a red light ... so thats the end of that idea ! I have to wait a while until i get the payout from her insurance company and ill be off the road for a while. I would like to get a commercial vehicle next , to be used for transportation of equipment and green waste for my employers company , but i am unsure how to go about this as an employee. Do i need my employer to write anything for the motor tax office ? is there anywhere i can find information on how to go about this ?( ive been ringing around all day and getting nothing but ' oh no dont ring us ring this number ' etc ) any info or advice would be greatly received !

How does your employer pay you, for the use of your van ? What insurance type would be on the van ? Are you Vat registered or PAYE ?

A worker for a company can do it subject to the following:

You must be a PAYE employee.

    You must complete form RF111A.

You need your insurance to cover the use of the vehicle for goods purposes in the course of trade or business - i.e commercial insurance.

You need a valid DOE assuming the vehicle is 12 months + old.

You need a weight docket if new vehicle or not previously taxed as a commercial.

You need an original letter from your employer to state/include:-
    • that you are an employee or your employer.
    • the registration number of the vehicle.
    • that the vehicle is used solely for the carriage of goods in the course of your employment with your employer.
    • the nature of the business.
    • your employers Revenue Registration Number.

@GM228 , Brilliant , cheers for that info .@ Needles73 , Im a PAYE employee yes , and my employer would not be paying me directly for the use of the van or jeep but it would be used for transportation of equipment to and from jobs , and it would be commercial insurance as id need to swap over. My last question is , when i find a commercial vehicle worth buying ( one that needs no conversion from private to commercial ) , lets just say it has just been DOE'd and has a few months tax on it , does that mean all i have to do initially is swap my insurance policy from private to commercial , then when the tax and doe runs out , complete the rest of the requirements ? or is it necessary to have it re tested and re taxed straight away ?

You need to research insurance first as it may not be straight forward transferring a private policy over to a commercial one.
