I am just burned out working in software development. Ive no real interest anymore, hate office politics and generally cant stand the thoughts of continuing in this.

Id like to do something different but what? I have a second degree and masters in an unrelated subject to IT (its philosophy) but its not really something I can see jobs in.

Terrible and all as it feels to say it, I just dont know what I want to be when I grow up. And considering Im the wrong side of 40 - thats not great!!

    Any ideas?

Must say I was feeling the same, also in IT. I decided to start a night course in an area I would like to work in. Maybe it will never happen but at least I now have other options on the horizon.

Do you mind me asking the area?

Im looking for ideas of what might be an enjoyable job for someone with my background.

Im a good problem solver, I get a buzz out of a good team. But I hate corporate nonsense, I hate time sheets, I hate time wasting meetings, office politics, etc..

The place Im in now wastes an awful lot of time having people fill out various forms on Sharepoint, you are expected to keep up with the company news homepage daily (which includes watching irrelevant videos), large swathes of time are wasted on team meetings where whats under discussion is irrelevant to most of the teams, way too much of IT and HR constantly wanting you to prove youve read documents and do online tests to prove it etc... There are times when I only get about 4 hours work done!

I hate all of the above.

    Snap!

Im in a similar position, 40+ in IT (although not in software development).

Like dextero I'm studying part-time with a view to moving on to a new area. I'm doing a teacher training course and tbh, Im finding it a bit heavy going combined with a busy job. The job prospects in teaching are not good, but it feels good to be getting stuck into something different.

I investigated several options. Teaching was not my first choice but, given my age, it was the best option of all areas I looked at.
