For the international day of the girl save the children drew up an index of where it's best to be born a girl. Ireland is ranked 29th in the world. It seems one the the thing we fall down on is our lack of women in parliament.

    http://www.savethechildren.org.uk/sites/default/files/images/Every_Last_Girl.pdf

The US is below us because of lack of representation and their high teenage pregnancy rates.

However it appears that in many countries it still sucks to be a woman.

Did anyone here do anything on the day?

One thing? No mention of Ireland's inhumane abortion laws?

Watched a lot of porn with women being objectified and degraded.

To be fair the men in porn aren't treated much better off camera. On camera they're just a penis.

Ireland and the U.S. do not belong in a study about awful places around the world to be female.

I don't think lack of female representation in western countries is due to women being stopped from holding such positions because of official policy - even if their path to those positions may not always be straightforward. And I don't know how a high proportion of teenage pregnancies means the U.S. offers a reduced quality of life to women and girls.

I didn't read all of the link ,just the league table. It is interesting that high teenage pregnancy rates go against a country when measuring if it's a good place for a girl to grow up .

I think Ireland became a better country when folks got their heads around not needing to hide pregnant girls away in state/religious institutions.

Maybe that's a marker of a country coming to maturity around female/sexual issues.

Education around sexual issues and the consequences of unprotected sex/unsafe sex now has a space to arise . Responsibility meeting freedom ,if you like.

I'm just wondering aloud to myself if high teenage pregnancy rates show a country moving away from sexual/gender repression ( and indication of freedom) but maybe lacking in open education around sex -responsibility-consequences-options ( which would be the mature counterbalance ).

Teenage pregnancies are linked to the opportunities that girls have. In the poorest countries girls get pregnant younger because of the lack of education and opportunities.

I wonder if they count countries or states? Is the United kingdom 4 countries?
