Hey all, tempted to try or get made make self loading bale trailer! So hope to pick up wrapper parts handy, to lift bale onto trailer. Ram to push bales back along trailer. Hope to take 6 bales. Seen few videos of same idea. Had trailer frame. So anyone any idea where around kerry Limerick or near by I may be able to get this handy money?
Thanks

Hardly a scrap yard with a damaged one?

I must make couple calls to local lads. Not holding much hope. Think best chance might be only abandoned in a yard. Suppose could get one made up depending on price.

Ah nooo!:(
Go ahead and try it. You won't learn nothing if you don't try and make it and then you will see ways of improving it.

Look at that fella from Kilkenny with the bale collector at the ploughing.
Bet he was always tinkering around with the welder.

Try out machinery dealers.
A lot of them have old wrappers about the place.

That's bringing in bales of hay. I presume you are thinking of making something for silage bales?

What's your budget? Or what do you think it'll cost you to make?

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,006 ✭✭✭tellmeabit

I'm not sure. I have trailer frame and wheels. Cheapest wrapper I saw was 400. Piping for frame of bale bed I dunno? Price of 6 bale carried new 1000. Maybe its a cracked idea. Drawing from awkward location. Tight passage so 6 would be the limit of the length allowed by the exit into road. Any ideas what it would cost ? Was goin to run it by few people to get rough costing.

My thoughts exactly. A flat trailer and loader will do the job faster.

ya, they would be awesome, but would be a huge layout for the small set up we have. only be moving 100 bales a year. and would need tractor big enough to pull it then. had a contract with a keltec 8 bale moving them last year but they couldn't turn out of the passage way. had to draw bales 1 by one to neighbours yard. very drawn out process. my thinking would be even if I only had the trailer I have in mind to draw them from my field to neighbour yard it would cut the time involved something fierce. takes nearly 10 mins to bring one bale to his yard. bringing 4 or 6 obviously cuts this down a lot. wouldn't get permission to widen the passage entrance from land owners.

I'd say 10k wouldn't buy the smallest of those.

But if take away all the 'fluff', brakes, big wheels, rams, quality engineering and 2 pac paint, you'd probably make it for around the grand!!

There's a lad scrapping mowers near Croom in Limerick, someone like that might be doing wrappers as well. Sorry I don't have a number for him, try DD.

Good idea though, hope it works for you. The one at the ploughing looked complicated, lots of pipes and rams to give trouble when they start leaking.

How long is the draw and what size tractor do you have? could a double bale handlerbe an option?
We use a malone bale carrier that can be loaded with a bale handler to move a lot of our bales . Its fairly tidy to get into and out of places but low to the ground. We have loaded it on the side of the road too

Anyone remember the inline version available a few years ago. Think malone made them fairly simple setup. Hard found id say.

the Draw is about 5 miles so 10 miles rounds, using MF 590. the plan is to purchase a similar trailer to the Malone if this idea is crazy or too expensive. so looks like there are costing around 1k on done deal. unless I can get one second hand. wanted to price using an old trailed chassis I have with the attachment on it. and a ram to push 2 bales back the trailer.

Ok so you a double is a no go then.
The malone bale carier was costing around 1400 new a few years ago.
When i was looking at them i looked at other ones too like the one you posted up but they were like chalk and cheese.
Malones one was designed and everything was built fairly strong and finished fairly well.
A lot of other small firms making them wouldnt be quite as stong overall.

One of the main gripes is the pipes on the malone are heavier. on the others , lighter steel , sometimes just a plastic cap thrown on them rather than steel, and a lump of angle iron supporting the whole thing. They bent very easily. My advice is to look at a few before you buy.

Some places used to hire them out as well, Delaneys in Roscrea used to.

You could buy second hand for 600/700.
Ive seen one made out of a dungspreader chassis that takes 4 bales instead of 6 which was easily and cheaply made . It was on practical farm ideas magazine

For your project , if you have the time and ability i would say fire ahead but be wary that it will cost more than you think, you say you have rams which is good but factor in hoses, valve chest , arm from wrapper , a blast of steel and you could be over a grand fairly quick.
It would be an interesting project to be at. id nearly go at it myself of i had the time

Indeed they have gotton rare. Second hand the asking price on them was normally 2.5k to 3k.
I think doubles and a loader have taken over from them in a lot of cases.
But another good option here though

thanks 9935452 ,
have half them home at the mo, but would like to have something setup for next year. it takes a fair bit of time for a small enough amount of work so anything to speed it up would be great. even with the chassis I have I might be able to make a 4 or 5 bale trailer without too much moneys into it I say. must get out the measure tape and see exactly what I have. But would be interested if I could pick up a scrapped wrapper make a shape at this.
thanks again. good info on the Malone trailer.

There is one hell of an engineering job, to make a self loading trailer with wrapper style arm that will reliably lift wrapped bale, move them back on the load and then unload without damaging the plastic. Not putting your idea down but you need to keep it simple. Most trailers you see like this on YouTube only collect unwrapped bales.

you have a couple of options though.

1. wrap the bales nearer to where they are stacked, easier to move unwrapped bales, but I presume you thought of this already and ruled it out.

2. Forget about adapting an existing trailer. This one from YouTube looks interesting, but I bet it would cost a fare few quid to build.

3. As mentioned previously buy or build,

4. A nice flat trailer and hydraulic lifter might be just as good.
maxresdefault.jpg

5. Something like this But using it will be a pain in the neck.

6. I seen another one which I quite like but can't find it at the moment, but the trailer completely lowers to the ground to make it easy to load with bale lifter.

Thanks for input. Idea would be that next year get the back to yard unwrapped most of them anyways. And then draw and feed on weekly basis. The 6 bale trailer is probably what I will end up with unless I get parts very cheap. To have a 6 bale trailer to draw to neighbours yard before drawing home would mean it would definitely be possible to draw home to own yard and wrap there.

Anyone know would 2 wheel drive mf590 be able to load bales on flat trailer?

590 with front loader

590 should be well able to load bales assuming condition of tractor and front loader is fairly good.

Hydrolics are good on it, so maybe another option

Ya spent a good bit of time using one with the contractor 8-9 years ago. I liked it but you'd want to be careful with it, easy enough to tear bales if you weren't used to it.
