Moving to Athlone

    Hi,

I will be relocating with my family to Athlone in December and, knowing very little of the town (I've only been there once), I would be grateful if anyone more familliar with the place could recommend some nice and quiet residential areas to rent a house for a family with a baby. Also, are there any areas in particular to avoid?

Daft.ie and Property.ie show a number of reasonably priced houses to rent around the Coosan area. What is the area like? Thanks in advance for all your comments!

Coosan is generally a good place especially towards the point.

Any address's near the AIT will be for students

The nicer family areas of town would be Coosan, Arcadia, Retreat, Cartrontroy, Cornamaddy and Bealnamulla.

If you're willing to move a bit futher out then the likes of Drum on the west side and Moydrum on the east side of town are nice residential areas of mostly one off houses. Ballykieran and Glassan just north of the town are worth considering too if your budget stretches that far.

Coosan is a nice area particularly out towards Coosan Point and around the Shancurragh, Hillquarter,Castlequarter,Meehanquarter and Garnafailagh areas.

Thanks a lot for all your recommendations (and warnings!).

I will start looking for a place around Coosan and hopefully find something suitable there. I only hope looking around won't take too many trips to Athlone, as I'm currently 2 hours' drive away:/. Anyway, looking forward to relocating - Athlone seems like my kind of town.

Coosan is a nice area. It's near enough to the town for both driving and walking. Has church, preschool, school, pub, supervalu nearby. It's beside the motorway for you to get to Dublin or Galway in a hour.
Other parts of the town to consider are Cornamaddy, Retreat and Monksland.

Avoid Willow Park like the Plague - it is often listed as Meadowbrook, Thornbury, Kilmacoo, Norwood.

Were living in the Woodville estate in Cornamaddy and couldn't recommend it highly enough. Close to town but very quite and 5 mins from motorway. Only downside is the traffic can be cat in the mornings.

Thanks for the tip. I was thinking there must be something dodgy about the area, as the accommodation there seems a little too affordable.

Thanks. There is a nice house available in that area, so I will definitely check it out. I hope to have a place already arranged by the end of the week.

+1 for Woodville. Should be 1 or 2 houses coming up for rent in the next while.

Coosan is a nice area. Take a trip down and have a look at what the local
Estate agents have to offer and then go see the areas you are interested in to Help make the right choice for you. It might be nice to be within walking distance of the town Or you may prefer a quieter location.
