DSG 7 Fault - VW Jetta

My car is 2011, 56K miles, Automatic - (DSG 7) - Long story short I started having problems with the gearbox the other day (Jumping from 1 to 3) and now the car will not go into reverse.

Sent it back to the main dealer I purchased the car from back in January 2015 and looking at around 4k to repair the gearbox.

Rang VW support and they advised me that it was out of warranty.

Is there anything that I can do here? I read new reports of VM error with DSG 7 but looks like I am getting nowhere!

    Any advice?

Did you ask the dealer to look for goodwill on your behalf?

What exactly is wrong with it and what are they replacing?
    Whole gearbox or mechatronic unit?

    I'd say both, for €4k.

Are you sure it's out of warranty???

Warranty is longer than 5 years surely?? With the low milage I would be amazed if VW won't help you out a bit cost wise. I would suggest to pressure them more to be honest.

WarrAnty was 2 years on them when new wasn't it?
They made a big fuss over increasing it to 3 years a few years back.

The fact that the Op says 56000 miles suggests it's a uk model.

is it impossible to just buy one in a breakers and throw it in theses days, i worked in a breakers and often even a really smashed car still had a useable gearbox

Warranty would be 3 years from vw.
It's along way out of warranty so it would want to be a known issue for them to help imo. I'm sure it's well outside any warranty you got when buying too.
I didn't think those later dsg boxes were troublesome but maybe I'm wrong.
I'd firstly get someone who might be able to diagnose the problem instead of just replacing everything as main dealers do.

2 years!!!!! Are you sure???? Hard to believe when their competitors are offering 7 and 8 years :eek::eek:

I guess if it is only 2 years (though I will check because I find that very hard to believe!!) I imagine VW will tell you to whistle...

EDIT: Just checked and you're right. Would not have believed that. only 80,000km too! The OPs car is actually out on milage too. Ignore my advice so, no way VW will do anything I don't think.

DQ200 (7-speed) was never really reliable... The "original" 6-speeds (DQ250) is much better.

Now a new breed of 7-speed DQ380/DQ381 is being rolled out, this time with wet clutches. Time will tell...

2 years was standard alright but 99% of cars has a third year add on extended warranty, which made the warranties, 2 years unlimited mileage or 3 year 90k kms. The 3rd year was from the distributor though so a UK car in its 3rd year couldn't claim warranty in ROI or vice versa.

If OP's Jetta is original Irish it's definitely worth requesting goodwill as VW are decent at honouring things like that on cars up to 6 years old. If it's a UK import they wont entertain it at all though.

You might have some chance of goodwill with VW Ireland if the car was originally Irish and had a main dealer service history. If it's an import they won't want to know. VW Ireland and VW UK are 2 separate entities and like government agencies won't or don't interact with each other.

Do you know was the oil in it was changed at 40k miles, that's what VW spec, if it was I would try to push for a goodwill gesture from them where they either cover the parts or perhaps 50% of the costs. €4k is a lot especially with those low miles on it, failure wouldn't be expected if the oil was changed.
How often does it need to be changed?

The oil, every 40,000 miles, the filter may need to be changed as well.

That service interval doesn't apply to the 7 speed box.

We have also seen clutch issues causing similar symptoms to the OP, especially the failure to engage reverse.

The gearbox itself is pretty simple on the 7 speed. It's the clutch pack or mechatronic unit that usually give the bother. Neither of which should cost €4K.

The car dealer I purchased the car from offered good will of 50% to replace the gearbox so the cost is now 2k. VW would not offer any help.

The problem was with magnets in the gearbox but these cannot be repaired or so I have been advised so the gearbox needs to be replaced. The gearbox itself is costing close to 3k?
