Drug testing for sub elite runners

You know whats crazy, They test Irish rally drivers for banned substances They show up a few times a year and piss test everyone. Its all to do with Irish sports council funding. We are given a list of the banned substances each year and are told to ask the Pharmacist to make sure any drugs we buy is not on the banned list. They should be able to advise.

I wouldnt be suprised if it is also done in Irish athletic events.

I administer high-dose steroids at work every day. As October 30th draws closer I do wonder what would happen if I munched down a whole load of them :D

It's a good idea, but whilst I am highly unlikely to be finishing high enough to get tested if I was I'd fail due to not having several TUEs done in advance. Would only need a few of the lesser elites in a race to not turn up or take a wrong turn or drop out for some reason and someone who really shouldn't need to worry about it being tested.

I ended up winning a county championship a few years ago just down to the guys crossing the line in front of me having not ticked the right box on the entry form. That could have landed me with a drug test failure under something like this.

The sad thing is, amateur cyclists and amateur triathletes have been found taking PEDs , so there are almost certainly amateur runners doing the same. Not to win anything, just for the bragging rights of being faster (and for triathletes maybe Kona qualification, for runners maybe a BQ)

Rumour mill (but a reliable source): a lab in Ireland has significant quantities of EPO go missing each year, allegedly to sub-elite runners :(

Imagine doping to try run 32 mins for 10k rather than 34 mins. Beyond sad! Pathetic even.

I believe it happens but I'd say it's uncommon. I'm sure it happens to a small degree at sub elite level in every sport. There is some money to be gained at the sharper end of sub elite racing but I can't imagine PEDs are cheap either. What ever instances of drug cheating at that level are ego driven I'd say. It is pathetic as you say but not a widespread issue imo.

Sad to you and me, impressive to them in their heads.

There was a case a few years back in the US centred around the Master's road racing scene (where decent prize can be picked up) where competitors were caught using PEDs.
Don't have time to put my finger on the link at the moment.

Yes, tbh this worries me too. I know that something otc I was told to take for high cholestrol ( I refused to go on life time prescrption meds) has an ingredient that has been considered by wada. If that changes I'll have a bit of a dilemma.

Yes, I have never seen any evidence of it but it would be niave to think that if people cut races they'd stop at PEDs. Here (the US) it seems to start at high school level.

Cost and logistics (imagine trying to keep a large number of runners around after a race to give a unine sample) mean it's hard to see this working. I don't really run with NYRR any more since we moved out of the city - but I'll be curious to see how they manage this - and to see if any familar names stop appearing.
