Starting motor quote

    Hey guys,

I'm just asking as ye will hopefully be more knowledgeable than me about these things. I think the starting motor is gone in my car. I've been quoted 340 to get a new one fitted, is that reasonable? I'll pay for it if it's needed but I just want to make sure I'm not getting taken for a ride :) (which I can't do at the moment :D)

The car is a Nissan Almeria if that helps?

    Cheers!
    Red

Car make and model always helps, add year and engine for even better help.

Besides the motor itself you need to pay for the labour replace it.

You can find aprox price of the motor on places like www.micksgarage.com, add 100 for labour.

Get quotes from 3 places and a dealer. This way you will know what the average is.

Depends on what engine its for and what starter motor is been bought for it , link below isn't accurate but gives an idea of the price range on the starter alone , then there is the labour

    It's an 06, 1.5L car.

Had a quick look there and it's 100 for the part alone on micks garage so I feel better knowing it's not a 20 part at least :D I don't mind paying for labour as I'm honest enough to admit I wouldn't have a clue what I'm doing

I applied for 3 quotes but it appears they are all the same company so I need to shop around a bit more now.

I paid €320 on a Citroen C4 1.6 hdi, where the starter motor is completely inaccessible at the back of the engine up high almost tucked under the dashboard. The guy had it all day as it was a pig of a job.If your starter motor is in a sensible position, that quote could be high.
Edit: apparently the 1.5 starter motor is a pig to get at as well!

I've zero problem with that if thats the case, i just thought it'd be worth asking in case it was something people knew could be done for 50 quid easily :)

    Thanks for the advice guys!

Would strike me as a bit on the expensive side. Where are you based op?

The starter is at the rear of the engine but handy enough to get at. Should be done handy enough in an hour. Micks Garage are quoting €101 for it although they quote €286 as the RRP.

Based in South Dublin in Deansgrange. I'd have to have someone come out to me. :(

Contact your insurance. Nearly all policies come with breakdown assistance of some sort and using it doesn't affect your NCB. Call a few garages and get quotes. Places like Advance Pitstop & First Stop can do this work and it's only a few bolts to swap over. Where I work the job is about €220 but we're in Tallaght.

I find Barry o Sullivan on the blessington road to be reasonably priced. He can take your old motor as part exchange. Nice man too. http://youtu.be/J9KDXWD-C4U

Or if you do get a new motor yourself and can get the car up to me I'll fit it for you.
A push start will have you on your way, just don't cut out at the lights :D
