So this programme is on Thursday night on RTE1 http://www.rte.ie/tv/wouldyoubelieve/

    Synopsis

Through interviews with Sex offenders and those that work with them, this special, investigative Would You Believe? documentary lifts the lid on Ireland's sex offenders to discover a number of unpalatable truths: most are not paedophiles, most are never caught or convicted and almost 40% of them are children under 18; most sexual abuse happens within families and is kept secret. Demonising the few sex offenders who are convicted is understandable, perhaps, but takes the focus away from the majority, who continue to operate undetected. In fact, it endangers rather than protects our children and our society.

There's a bit more on the website, inc a portion on a community in Canda who took in a notorious abuser, and surrounded him with support.

So people of After hours would you ever see a day that we as a society can look at abusers in a different light?

As a person who was abused ,i can say hand on heart that i support bringing the subject away from the pitchfork brigade and hang them by the nuts and breasts(yes women abuse as well) and hopefully in time we can begi to look at abuse in a different way, understand that it's more outthere and its our mothers, brothers, sisters, fathers, aunts, uncles, grandparents who are abusers and while we shove it underground and make pariahs,we are actually doing the person who was abused a disservice by heaping shame and making it taboo, while making victimhood a heavier weight

I understand that it's an emotive subject and will attract strong words and threats and experiences, but please think about the person who is reading this, nobody needs to get so strong that it causes pain and triggers and if you do

I have sympathy for someone who is sexually attracted to children but never acts on it. It's an awful illness to live with, knowing what you are.

Those, like on the news this week who rape and torture young children, Im not sure i could ever forgive or think there is redemption for that. But I've no idea, it's a very emotive and difficult subject. Every case is different.

I find the whole thing disturbing but the voyeuristic reporting and the salacious detail of the court cases more disturbing tbh.

I agree with the reporting ,Some mornings when i pick up a paper and i have to wonder what guidelines are in place on reporting or if there's any moral aspect ,or even better still do the media get training from groups on triggers etc,

As someone else said, people that are like that and don't act on it should be given help and treatment so they came cope with their urges and supress them.

As for those that do abuse, Indonesia has the right approach in dealing with them.
