Heard this on the radio at lunch time today. It's very sad news.

A great trainer and rider who had some lovely winners, including Glencarig Lady and Bobsline and Ebony Jane.

    Condolences to his family. RIP.

RIP to a grand old trainer and a real gentleman to those who knew him.
He had a good start with winning the Gold Cup in '72 but for many years hence, he was really adept at landing a gamble in a big handicap. I would imagine his traditional old-knowledge way of bringing on national hunt horses slowly over time lasted with him to the end.

I had a great affinity myself for Ebony Jane- I think she is the only horse in history to be placed in both the Irish and English National in the same WEEK back in '94. That was an incredible effort from horse and trainer; just 5 days between the two races, both on heavy ground.

    God rest his soul
