Etape is announced, Briançon - Izoard on July 16. Looks ok but it's longer than the last few years and about 3500m climbing.

Just regarding this, was interested in doing it, what's the cost involved and how many people would be doing it on the day? I'd assume 1000s?

initially saw this and thought - meh...for the cost of doing it, there isn't much 'bang for yer buck' (hate that saying, but all that comes to mind) in terms of 'famous' climbs to tick off the bucket list - compare it to the 2012 version where we seemed to have a load of them all piled into 150km.
But looking closer at it there now... there's a section there of about 65km of constant climbing! This will be very tough - ok if you have 4 Cols in one event that's great of course, but with all the downhills you have plenty of 'rest'...here it looks to be just constant with 3500m of climbing and nowhere near that in terms of descending.
Opens this Friday I think....might just be tempted!!

Pity the stage before isn't the Etape but whereas this might only have that one 'big one', it will not be easy at all!

15000 starters and cost would be about 1200euro depending on what operator you use or try diy it for less

Entry is €100, I got a mail earlier for pre entry as a past participant.
Cost varies from about €600 up to €1000 depending on the package, transfers etc.
Self drive is doable as you could cycle back down to Briancon after the finish which would help reduce costs.
I've gone with Sean O'Leary of trail-seekers in Cork and we get a few cycles in before and after, which around there could include the Galibier and Alpe D'Huez if they're on the bucket list.
There's also the bonus of the tour passing near enough on the Wed/Thu/Fri so you've the chance to see the start and some climbs.

Cycling this in July, Very excited!

Travelling with a few families for the week. Dont know the briancon area too well (stayed in chamonix a dew times before). Any tips on where might be good to stay, e.g. where there would be facilities for kids and would have access to some good cycles, would be appreciated.

Anyone recommend a good company/shop to rent a bike off?

    Thanks
