Taxing a car with no insurance

Found some threads with similar titles, but they're not exactly about what I'm facing here.

I purchased a new car, will go through VRT this week, and once that's done I'll transfer my insurance over from my previous car (which is still up for sale).

My previous car is taxed only until November, and I would prefer renewing as it will be easier to sell. I remember that Motortax.ie asks for insurance policy number though - is there anything I can do to tax it without valid/current insurance?

Just give them random numbers. It works. :)

Put in any random number you want it doesn't actually check.

Put in the policy number from your last insurance cert or one from 5 years ago. The motor tax department have no link to an insurance database to verify it. It's just another pointless box to tick.

This should be a sticky at this stage.

Don't waste your money taxing it, you wont get any more for the car with tax than without.

I'd sell without taxing it, most people won't expect tax to be very long on the car either way. You could also be trying to sell the car for months while the tax is ticking away in your driveway. Far better getting the car professionally valetted and getting a proper advert put together to sell it, put it up for sale in the next few days.
