Flooring for an Apartment

    Hi,

I'm looking to get my flooring replaced. Nothing wrong with the laminate floor I have, it just looks a bit dated.

Is there any real difference between 7 inch or 8 inch laminate?

I went to Des Kelly and they charge 9e/sq. meter to lay and 6e/sq meter to uplift and remove existing.

Does this sound reasonable or would it be cheaper to just buy raw materials and put up an add on tradesmen.ie?

    THANKS FOR ANY ADVICE

    Hi,

If you are on tighter budget i would recommend buying materials yourself and hiring some self employed guy which will save you hundreds. So my advice would be look around before going for des kelly.

To answer your question about the thickness of the flooring. 7 and 8 mm would not make a big difference but you have to look for european standards for durability, AC3, AC4, AC5. AC5 being the most durable and usually manufacturer gives 20-30 years guaranty while AC3 only 5-15 years, depending on the thickness of the floor as well.

For the material would recommend looking into these guys as they do really good deals. <SNIP>

    Hope this helps.

Samsung Don't know if you have done anything about this yet.

My apartment had storage heating and I deplored it... absolutely hated it.

And we had carpeting as well.

So I decided to install electric underfloor heating.
The only issue is that most laminate flooring will not accept this and my wife would not accept laminate under any circumstances either.
So i went with engineered wood flooring and did it all myself.

No previous experience, and it did take some time, but it looks great and entire apartment is nice and toasty during winter. Heating controlled via phone/tablet or wall thermostat and across Internet as well.

Got the wood flooring from Project Tile in Damastown and the underfloor heating from Hotfoot in Kilcoole, Wicklow.

Saved a fortune doing it myself, i think. Some of the quotes were ridiculous.
With the right tools anything is possible.

I did not tackle everything in one go. I did the lounge and hallway one Christmas and then the two bedrooms the next.
Obviously I wasn't in much of a hurry but i also had to prove to the wife that wood flooring in the bedrooms was a good idea.
And it allowed me to stagger costs as well rather than everything in one go.
