In a refurb we have taken out an old horrible fireplace and looking to put in a new one to make a working open fireplace.
I got a great old surround from adverts and want to build a fireplace to match.
The plan is a find a simple insert and then tiles to the wood surround.
No idea about fireplaces so any advice welcome!

The wood surround needs a good cleaning and oiling to restore the finish, if anyone has a recommended oil please let me know.

Can cement tiles be used around the fireplace? What do they need to sit on?

I will be interested in replies about tiles. I have some totally bog-standard wall tiles that I put on a concrete plinth about 15 years ago.

Some of them go more or less under the firegrate at the fire edge. There is one small crack on one of those tiles under the grate, otherwise the rest are perfect. I would like to change them now but have been told that I must get certain tiles (cant remember exactly what I was told) and that I could not have those Moroccan ones. Whether this is a belt and bracers approach on the part of the store I do not know.

Thanks for the detail - 15cm of heat resistant material around the fire sounds like I should be OK.
The insert will probably be cast iron for a few cm and then the tiles. So any idea will cement tiles work? I see you can get heat resistant tile adhesive and fireboard as a backer for the tiles.

To clean your timber fire surround , which looks like mahogany and may have been French polished originally, get 200ml of raw linseed oil add one tablespoon of methylated spirits, turpentine, and white vinegar, shake well and apply with 0000 grade wire wool, preferably rubbing with the grain if possible.

Thanks tabby - I will give that a go.
