Varnishing staircase

    Hi guys

I wonder if you could give me some advice here. So, the staircase when new seems to have been given a coat or two of clear varnish. It was never done properly and was really rough to the feel.

I sanded it down smooth with some sanding sponge pads. The balustrade spindles are those fluted ones and so it was a long, monotonous job. The existing varnish is not fully removed, but everything now is nice and smooth.

I bought some walnut interior varnish and applied two coats to a test area. I'm not a bit happy with the results. The varnish is watery and didn't darken the wood much. It not looks just dirty.

Does anyone have any ideas on what to use here? It's quite a big job so I don't really want to apply 5 or 6 coats. I was thinking two coats. :)

A darker stain or varnish that presumably will hide some of your sanding marks?
