Adobe Lightroom is probably the best, but it's not free.

How about Google Photos. It's free, you can upload everything and it'll automatically sort by date. Only downside is that unless you pay (or limit yourself to 15Gb) they slight reduce the quality of the image. To be honest though, it's not really noticeable unless you're storing high resolution stuff that you want blown up large.

This looks like its got good potential. Going to look at it shortly for family photo album. I had everything on Picasa but thats gone kaput. Use Flickr for my usual photo stuff but want an easily organised app for family stuff - essentially a digital photo album.

I used to use it for sharing family photo albums too but I moved to SmugMug (not free) so I could upload photos in their original full quality. Not that Google Photos wasn't great for that, it's just that I couldn't cope with the thought of Google's algorithm reducing the image quality even 1% :pac: Since then I just use Google Photos for backing up personal photos, in particular auto backups from my phone.

Agree with Paulw, I use the catalogues in LR5 to store my pics, very easy to find pics using key words.

LR will not be suitable for non-tech savvy user imo.

Also not free (one of the OP requirements).
