Graduate Economist – Economic and Evaluation Service

I've submitted my application to the Economic and Evaluation Service. There is a two step process; a presentation exercise followed by an interview. I went for the same job this time last year but didn't get through the presentation. Last time I was given a topic and one hour to prepare a written report and present on it. My topic was about a fictional town with a lot of social problems; high unemployment, high crime etc and was given €1 billion to “fix” it. What do you do?

I'm wondering for the other people who have gone through this process what topics were you given and what did you talk about?

Hi, I'm sorry but this is my first time going through the process so I can't really help with your question. I was just wondering if you have the PDF that gave details about the job/ hiring process? I seem to have deleted it and it is no longer online! Thanks in advance

I think I have it saved on my work computer, I'll send you a message tomorrow about it.

Hi, I'm sorry I can't help you either as I am only applying for the first time this year. If you don't mind me asking, did they get you to do any econometric work such as Stata in your presentation exercise last year? I was just thinking the time allocated seems very short for that kind of analysis.

Thanks in advance and best of luck this year!

Hi, they didn't ask me to do any econometric work last time. You're right that it there wouldn't be enough time available to do something like that and the equipment isn't there to do it either. I was given a laptop with Microsoft Word being the only function for the report you have to type up, the rest of the documents were just given to me in an envelope and I wrote some presentation notes on a blank piece of paper.

It's more of a focus on policy than statistics.

Does anyone know about the level of knowledge you can assume the audience has? Should you be assuming they have a knowledge of basic economic concepts?

I'm doing this in Wednesday and I'm not sure how to prepare. What are people looking at? Gimme have a look at labour policies and lavou market policies but outside of that I'm not sure what can be asked.

How did the Wednesday interviews go for everyone :) What presentation exercise question were you given? I felt mine went quite poorly.

I haven't had mine yet. Do you mind me asking what sort of thing it was on? Hopefully it went better than you think!

Hey guys, have the presentation exercise coming up as per this year's campaign. Just wondering what kind of topics did people have to present on. First time doing something like this so looking for all the help I can get, thanks!

Last year I had education funding. This year I didn't get through the application form screening.

I didn’t either which bugs me.
This seems to me to be the numerate stream of graduate recruitment and they’re very narrowly focusing on economics as the sole worthy speciality.

I have a fair bit of economics amongst my various degrees and could 100% nail the talk about your skills in these five areas questions but because my degrees don’t specifically say economics, I’m excluded. Questions of the type given in the first post in this thread were a regular feature of my masters studies.

I have a BSc in Statistics, a HDip in Statistics, an MA Qualifier in Economics, a GradDip in Economics (MA without thesis), a PostgradDip in Accounting and am finishing up a Springboard HDip in Data Analytics. So I have two that do specifically say economics and I didn't make it through the screening.

Trainee Auditor in the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General is another numerate stream for graduates in the public sector. I have supervised tests and an audit case study lined up for that at the office of the Public Appointments Service but I got that far before and it felt like you need work experience or a specific audit module to have a chance at the case study.
