    Hi there,

We are about to commence construction and am looking for opinions on whether a heat recovery system is essential ? We are going with ground source heat pump as our heating source and our engineer is recommending the heat recovery system, we are not convinced about its necessity although we are hoping to achieve a fairly good airtightness? Anyone used geothermal without it? Or anyone using it that would recommend it?

If your house is airtight, how do you propose to vent the stale air without losing heat?

Id go so far as to say that a Heat recovery system is essential if you're trying to achieve good airtightness....irrespective of whether you're using geothermal or not. A geothermal system produces heat efficiently..it seems a waste to dump heat by not having heat recovery ventilation...

MVHR has nothing to do with a gshp system. Mvhr is for efficient ventilation and is essential for a healthy indoor living environment if the house is air tight.

If you don't mind me saying it but you seem to be putting the cart before the horse; in that you are sure of your heating system but not sure how your thermal envelope and ventilation will work. If it were me, I would be concentrating first and foremost on the thermal envelope/ventilation and then thinking what heating system (if any) I needed.

As a user of a mvhr system for nearly a decade, I wouldn't be without it.
