Have a few here. Not overly prolific. Usually about 1.75 , but I like them, nice ewes to work with. Quiet easy going sheep, with decent mothering ability. You can put anything you wish on them. I put a charley, a texel and llyen rams on them, but would only keep the llyen as replacements.

Do you find them easy lambed with the texel?

Put any ewe to a awkward ram and you'd have issues but overall their fine, but don't keep any daughters as they'd be 75 % texel.

Whats the issue with 75% texel?

The mothers are fine at 50%, but daughters at 75% are more muscular and harder lambed. They also aren't as milky and maternal instincts are reduced significantly, but on the flip side are great butchers lambs.

What are they like with the Charley?

Finest, but again don't be tempted to keep the resulting ewe lambs as they'll probably look more like their mothers, but not as clean speckled, but will have charley traits.

    Pardon the ignorance but what's a Hiltex? 50% Texel and 50% ......?

Blackface mountain ewe crossed to texel ram.

Thanks Green Farmer. It should do a lot for the carcase. You can nearly recognise a Texel carcase when it passes in the abattoir and you can similarly recognise a Mountainy carcase. A cross would do a lot to improve the Black Face.

The texel gives them more confirmation alright, along with a docile nature, yet retaining the mothers maternal genes. Sounds like I'm a p.r spokesman for them, but I just like docile sheep and have a soft spot for the texel.
