Middle class, good looking with a good job or Roman emperor? Which would you opt for?

Roman Emperor in 1AD would be cool, Roman Emperor in 69, 254AD, not so good.

I'd like to be Marcus Aurelius. His philosophies still ring true today. Pick up a copy of "Meditations" if you get a chance, he really knew how to live and was a true stoic.

In order to properly enjoy the full Roman Emperor experience you'd need to forego modern sensibilities with regard to human rights, slavery, sex slavery, child abuse, murder, rape, torture. You'd have comforts like hot running water and underfloor heating but you'd have no modern medicine, antibiotics, painkillers etc.

My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the TRUE emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.

Even Julius Caesar was stabbed in the back :) ill take the safe option, besides....i like the technological age we live in even if it gets messy at times :)

    Say what?

It's reminds me of nothing so much as how to make friends and influence people. Useful if you are already rich.

Also not true. I just opened a copy where Aurelius said he welcomed free speech. Not true. Try telling the emperor that he sucked.

I'd like to be able to have a trial run of a few weeks as a Roman Emperor before I had to make the decision.

Julius Caesar wasn't even an Emperor - his reign was still during the time of the Republic. His successor Augustus was the first emperor [/pedant]

Middle class in the time of the perpetually offended, or Emperor in a time where modern medicine didn't exist...I'll take the middle class option, thanks.

To be fair though, he was emperor in all but name I think.. Some historians consider him the first. I think.

Granted i must brush up on my Ancient Roman History but i think it is fair to say that Julius had a bit of clout until Brutus decided enough was enough

A Roman Emperor, well, in a Monty Python sketch anyway.

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

All the Roman emperors are dead, and I'm still alive, so I'll stay where I am, thanks.

Julius Caeser said he'd rather be first a village than second in Rome.

Then again what he did to the Gauls was genocide. And it was done to win public support and riches as as stepping stone to political gains in Rome.

    That's bad karma.

Emperor for life wasn't necessarily a good thing

    Year of the Four Emperors
69 AD, in which four emperors ruled in succession: Galba, Otho, Vitellius, and Vespasian.

    Year of the Five Emperors
193 AD, in which there were five claimants for the title of Roman Emperor. The five were Pertinax, Didius Julianus, Pescennius Niger, Clodius Albinus and Septimius Severus.

    Year of the Six Emperors
238 AD, during which six people were recognised as emperors of Rome.

Back in Rome they had no tomatoes. So no pizza. No fridges. So no cold beer to go with your no pizza.
No spuds either. Very unlikely to get a curry.
    No bleach or deodorant.
