Hi, The other day I was leaving a friends house while driving out the lane I must have drove over a stone that bounced up and hit something, a knocking started coming from the front of the car, the CV joint seems to be fine, the outer tie rod isn't too bad, maybe it could be in by the inner tie rod, any ideas ?

    Does it come and go?
    Only there when turning?
    Never then when not moving?
Increases volume or rate of knocking with engine speed?
Increases volume or rate of knocking with road speed?

On a smooth road its not always making noise only when turning, but on a rough road its constantly coming and going, nope no noise when not moving, same rate of knocking all the time with road speed,

Get under the car and make sure what ever you drove over hasn't lodged somewhere and that's what's rattling. Believe me I had my gearbox dead and buried one time and it turned out to be a small rock knocking around on top of it :o.

I once had a knock in my van. Only a random knock and couldn't find what it was. Roll on a few months and I had a doe test. The bearing at the top of my shock had completely disintegrated. That what was causing the noise. Worth getting checked out

High chance it's a drop link I'd say! Mine developed a bad knocking from drover side over rough road, the drop link was hanging off.

Oh by all means get the knocking checked out, my post was more aimed towards to start with the simple easy fix and work your way up.

With regards to the op, the cv/driveshaft may look okay but can still be knackered. Just last night my girlfriends car developed a knocking and so today I replaced the driveshaft with a new one. I had the both of them out side by side and bar the ageing and dirt you'd swear both were perfect..... New driveshaft in and problem was sorted.
