Stolen car in Dublin - Toyota Avensis 09 tn 1211

my wife's Toyota Avensis 09 tn 1211 (green) car was stolen from fake buyer on Wednesday 12th October from my house in Clondalkin. Guy called to house claiming to be mechanic I was led to expect by earlier phone call. He popped bonnet, asked for keys, sat in and drove off. I presumed he was testing car but never returned.

Insurance company do not cover this loss-

Section 2 – Loss or Damage to the Insured Vehicle caused by Fire and Theft.

“Loss or damage to the insured vehicle where possession of it is gained by the deception on the part of someone pretending to be a purchaser or someone pretending to act on behalf of a purchaser.”

Asking for eyes out for my car..Thank you

It's hardly a coincidence that you called your mechanic and then someone arrives at your door claiming to be one.

However, were you expecting your mechanic to make a home visit?
Where was the fake mechanics accent from?

I think it's that the car was for sale, random punter comes to look at the car and then tells the OP that they will buy the car but want to send their mechanic out to look at it first. OP thinks the car is sold, lets guard down.
Few hours later, fake mechanic shows up and nicks the car. OP thinks they're test driving it on behalf of the buyer so doesn't stop them.

Please keep an eye out for it if you see it parked up anywhere

Contact E Flow to see if the car has gone through any toll roads.

Also if you left the logbook in the car it's possible they may try to sell it on quickly or may try to sell it on regardless, keep an eye on Donedeal for newly added Avensis models.

I'd say if they are selling it they will put cloned plates on it along with having fake documents. As the Avensis is a very common car it makes it more difficult to spot randomly. They may also have parked it up somewhere for a while until Garda interest on it waivers and may use it for criminal activity at a later date. You also see stolen cars recovered all the time on the Garda Twitter page, normally they are parked up in apartment car parks or housing estates where they just blend in.

The unbarriered Underground hotel car parks (mainly along the m50) have been known to be spots for robbed cars to be stored.
Worth getting a few mates to do the rounds of them.

tax disc holder is in a different position.

    edit:
    and different wheels

09SO1211 is also a registered Avensis, could be a massive coincidence. Although the same numbers on the plate is bizarre.

Although the number plate on the front of the SO reg one looks broken and stuck on!

Could always view it and see if it matched the chassis numbers matched if the OP thought it was theirs

Maybe it's not it. But strange to see such similarities. Not sure color is right, OP's car looks grey but he called it green, but to me his car looks grey, but that car for sale has a grey with green hint. Neither car is apply green thats for sure.

Easy things to change. But seems it's another car and not OP's

Contact the dept of transport in Shannon on Monday to see if they can put an alert on the national vehicle database.
At least if a transfer of ownership is attempted it will be flagged. 0818 411412.
They may need AGS or your insurance company to alert them but it's worth a go.

The Sligo one is listed as grey and the Tip one is listed green - looks like a massive coincidence

    It's a Funny coincidence
If it was a 161 they'd be Hyundai jeeps

Probably not it but I will post just in case. This car is identical to the one that was stolen.

The stickers on the windscreen (tax, insurance, nct holder + probably a service sticker on the upper drivers edge of the screen) all have changed location, the wheels are different and the OPs car has fogs whereas the Sligo car doesn't.

However, both cars appear to have a small nick at the same location on the driver's side A pillar (edit: never mind, it's the panel gap. Doh!).

Isn't that just the panel gap at the top of the wing?

    Plus it's a different colour

Is that their location? If so, I'll amend my post.

I would assume that if it was stolen to be sold under false plates they would at least make up plates that match a similar car so when someone does a quick motorcheck it comes up clean.....
