Should I sell iMac and move to MacBook Pro?

Longtime iMac user here but I've never ventured into MacBook territory. Mostly because of horror stories re batteries.

But it may be time for a change. I now need to have a laptop (beyond the day job Windows laptop) but I don't want to have both an iMac and MacBook.

I've got an iPad Air for the less demanding tasks.

If I was to try sell my iMac, would there be a demand for it and anyone want to hazard a guess on what I could get?

    Its a late 2013 27" iMac. 3.2Ghz with 8gb of RAM. 1TB HDD.

I'd be looking at a 13" MacBook Pro mid range spec. I'd also have to factor in getting an external wifi drive (possibly Time Capsule) as I have many gigs of video and photographs.

Whats people's opinions on demand and sale price?

Not being funny, faceman, but what horror stories? I've had Mac laptops since the Wallstreet, and the only one I ever had a problem with was the 12" Powerbook which ran really hot because Apple wouldn't allow the fans to come on to save battery....

Its the modern ones that I'm hearing horror stories of with the prices to change batteries!!! I think my MBA will be my last Mac if they keep the insane prices going. I'd be hard pushed to let a magnificent beast like that iMac go....

For the price of a new Time Capsule, you not sell the iMac for that much more. Plus you could use it to back up your laptop HD size permitting and it still functions as a working computer. I'd hang onto it if I were you.

I've had mixed experiences trying to go with just a laptop when I still needed a desktop. I ended up getting an external display and the MacBook almost never left the desk. I subsequently got an underpowered 11-inch Air to be my actual laptop. I'm still stuck with this messy setup and can't really figure out how to get away from it.

So I'd be leaning towards Losty's suggestion of keeping the iMac. Or at least wait and see how you get on with the MBP as your primary machine before selling the iMac.

Thanks folks. Guess I'll keep the iMac. I do a lot of photo and video stuff so moving to a lower spec machine won't be good.

Will keep an eye out for a cheap MacBook!
