Unusual hole in wall

    Hello All,

Quick question for you all. I am renovating an old stone house (about 150yrs old). I have stripped the old lime plaster from the inside and have found a hole in the wall inside the front door, about 4 feet about ground level. It is about 6in square and goes back about 6 feet into the front wall. It seems to have been lined with timber (now rotten). I cannot say if the hole has same dimensions for whole length, but seems to be square for a few feet. I would like to know it's purpose. Anyone any ideas? Thank you.

    All the best,
    Michael
