Ive had social anxiety for years, ive tried getting help for it but ive been unsuccessful, any doctor ive been to just put me on lexapro which left me worse, ive been to a few different counsellors, they where either free through my university or discount student counsellors that really wearnt very good, they all advised me to go get CBT but none of them offered the treatment themselves. Ive finally found a counsellor that does CBT in my town but she charges 40 euro a session, ive made an appointment with her but im thinking of cancelling it because its so expensive, paying 40 euro every week just to talk to someone for an hour. I really want to get better but im on social welfare and dont really have that extra money at the end of the week.
Is the CBT worth it or am I burning money? I feel like ive tried all other options to beat this but I dont want to waste money I dont have either, it will mean going without some necessities until the treatment is over.

    Any advice?

Hi, I am currently doing CBT and I can tell you that I don't find it to be like counselling at all where you just talk about your issues. You will be given homework to do every week and will learn coping mechanisms in order to deal with your social anxiety. My session costs me 50 Euro per week and yes it is expensive but it is fast acting so you won't be doing it as long as is usual for counselling. I reasoned with myself that I wouldn't think twice about spending 50 Euro on drinks or a new pair of shoes so what value had my mental health? I would say give it a bash, what have you to loose ? people around me say they can already see a positive difference and I'm only 5 weeks in!

Hi Airy, first of all never give up hope. I feel your pain when trying to get treatment with not much money coming in. I never tried CBT but have tried a few councillors some were ok. I can relate to a lot of what you have said. There is organisations out there that only charge or ask you what you can afford to pay.

Might be worth contacting Pieta House or Aware who may be able to help and give you support.
CBT has a very good outcome for anxiety. The practicioner may also be able to indicate how many sessions you may need after viewing your progress over the first few weeks.
    Best Wishes.

CBT gave me my life back. You've everything to gain and only money to lose (money that can't make you happy if you remain unwell). Go for it, give it a decent chance.

In my case, I don't actually know how it worked. I'm not sure what it was about it that made such a difference, but the important thing is that it worked. If you don't like the therapist, or click with them, find a different one but don't give up. You're investing in you.
