We're looking to hire a car for the weekend as our car insurance is just out and we don't have the funds just yet... I know the last time we were charged an excess waiver of a certain amount per day to hire the car as we didn't have €1200 on our credit card to cover the costs of car damage... The excess waiver ended up costing more then the cost of hiring the actual car. Is there a way around this? I don't quite understand it all if I'm honest.
I have heard from Blue insurance which are quoting me 8 euro for the two days, does this mean we won't have to pay an excess waiver to the car hire company if we don't have the €1200 on our card?
This may sound confusing as i'm pretty confused myself but any advice would be much appreciated.

Will I have to leave a deposit when I pick my car up?
Yes. At pick-up, the counter staff will need you to leave a deposit in case the car is damaged or stolen during your rental. The deposit amount will be temporarily blocked on / taken from the main driver’s credit / debit card and held for the duration of the rental.
As long as you bring the car back undamaged at the end of the rental, the money will be unblocked / returned within seven working days.
If your main driver’s card does not have enough available funds for the deposit, you may not be allowed to take the car – or the counter staff may insist you buy additional cover from them.
This is standard practice with all car hire companies.

This is from Rental Cars website. Check out AIG Annual Policy for €50 which will provide adequate cover for Rental Cars.

ok so it says the following...... (does this mean If I click the "Yes, please add Excess Refund - Excess Refund Product." and pay the extra 4.20 per day then I won't need the deposit of €1800 on my credit card?)

    Protect your Excess
The excess on this vehicle is € 1800.00

When you collect your car a deposit is normally held against your credit card for your excess which may be charged if the vehicle is damaged. Protect your excess by taking our great value Excess Refund product and we will refund to you any deductions from you excess. We recommend you take this option.

    Excess Refund protection:
Peace of mind - we'll refund the excess charged to you in case of an accident
Protection from claims made against scratches and dents
So much cheaper than buying a similar protection from the collection desk - as much a half the cost!
    More information...

No thanks, I’ll take the risk if i have an accident

Yes, please add Excess Refund - Excess Refund Product.
    € 0.00
    € 4.20 per day

If that is cover from another party, independent of the hire firm, the car hire firm will still require the credit card deposit.
That other party insurance would refund you later so it wont help in this situation.
If you cannot front up the deposit on your card, just pay the full insurance direct to hire company. Its a rip off but its street ahead of other party cover as you can basically hand the car back on its roof and walk away carefree whereas with other cover, the hire firm will charge you excess and you will have a mountain of form filling and crap to look after before you will get your 1800 back (in the event of damaging the car)

All I know is that if I had taken out their insurance at the counter they would only have put a "hold" of €800 on my credit card. As I had my own €50 policy I declined their offer. However it then meant that they put a 1500 euro "hold" on my credit card. It worked out cheaper for me as I was renting for 2 weeks.
