My immersion switch has started tripping when I turn it on and a visible spark can be seen from the switch. Anyone ever seen this before. I'm assuming it's an electrical fault and I'd need an electrician rather than a plumber? Any advice appreciated.

Leave it tripped/safe at the fuseboard and get an electrician to check before you enable the fuse again.

Sounds like the element needs replacing. Definitely get a sparks in. They'll confirm the problem within a few minutes
