Calculating Capital Gain - pre probate

I need help in calculating a potential capital gain for my mother.
The shares were owned by my father and mother up until my fathers death 5 years ago. They transferred to my mother with tax liability under probate process. If she were to sell them now what would the cost of acquisition of the shares be in the Capital Gain calculation? Would it be the cost at the time of transfer under probate or would we need to go back to the original purchase price prior to my fathers death?
