    So... what do we face?

Some news outlets seem to be framing some diesel pain in light of the VW emissions cheats (as if VW somehow made clean diesel into dirty diesel), will it be a levy like Gormley put on that awful dirty petrol? Will it be an excuse for a general swipe at the low rate of tax on CO2 emissions cars?

It has been a while since either fuel was it, will both be hit equally?

Will they ever un-wind the market from a skewed rating system that favours higher PM/NOx emitting cars?

    Gentlemen, start your engines!

There never was clean diesel. It emits lower CO2 which may kill you in a few years or more, but the stuff that kills you today it produces much more.

They'll increase the diesel tax to petrol levels over the next few years. And most likely increase VRT and tax rates to recoup the money lost on manufacturers making less CO2 emitting vehicles.

That would be my take on it too Del2005.
Although I was trying to avoid the "clean diesel" debate this time. To give VW credit, it seems unfair to me that they seem to be demonised by news outlets and the public for making something that was clean into something dirty... when in reality they just "broke the spell".

There'll be no motor insurance premium transparency for sure.

The M20? Sort of motor related.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,704 ✭✭✭Cheensbo

They're gonna change motor tax on pre 2008 vehicles to the emissions levels picked up at nct time.

I'm off to apply for a mortgage :pac:

Honestly though, I can see a few cents added to diesel, one or two to petrol and not much change to taxes.

I think petrol and diesel won't be touched in this budget. Cigarettes will see an increase.

Maybe motor tax might see an increase?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,280 ✭✭✭twin_beacon

can't see fuel being touched at all as they are focusing on USC cuts to help the squeezed middle. I'd say smokes and alcohol will get the increases.

2c a litre on diesel for the next few budgets until parity with petrol is what I've read.

They wont touch ciggies as they'll be losing money if they do.

30 cent on them, and rightly so.

correct, however its short term loss for long term gain. Having less smokers reduces the strain on the health system, and less money being pumped into it.

reports this morning saying it could be as high as 50c!

Despite seeing the damage and health issues first hand (I've watched too many people from older generations deteriorate too fast) I don't think this is the way to address the problem.

Cashing in on an addiction rather than rehabilitating is the way I see it, correct me if I have a wrong view on that though

Maybe they could sell them way cheaper if the manufacturers added a practically self certified filtration system that could be easily removed with no follow up testing...

Just pushes people further and further into black market sales. There is also plenty of alternative brands now which are still comfortably under the €9 mark.

There is literally people around Henry Street and Mary street openly selling sleeves of smokes for €50 a carton.....

Smoking is a conscious choice I make, all the hikes just make me be cuter about what and where I'm buying.

In regards the budget and motoring, don't expect much. The lack of immediate action on the insurance industry, a private entity forging a monopoly on a legal requirement to drive, is shocking.

As will likely be said by numerous commentators today, anything gained today will be absorbed and then some by someones next renewal.

lord ross is looking for an immediate parity, the problem then is it raises the cost of everything due to the raise in transport costs, the end line is goverments everywhere need high fuel prices as an earner

I don't think we'll see any changes to motor tax. Fuel might be a different issue though.

Here was me thinking this was the motors forum!

Been a bit of a nonevent all round as far as I can see. Bad if you smoke. Good if you have sheep. Neutral for motorists? Unless there's anything hidden in the fine print.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,280 ✭✭✭twin_beacon

yea, not really much worth writing home about. The reduction in USC, 10c increase in minimum wage, and increase in social welfare were all small, and already leaked so there was no shock. I don't think people were expecting much anyway.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,569 ✭✭✭Special Circumstances

I do feel like I'm missing out by not having any sheep though.

good news for electric cars.... particularly the Tesla 3 due out next year...

VRT relief on them until 2022... which means it'll be possible to import a Tesla 3 / Model S from the UK at a steep discount...

And if that filtration was proven to not be as good as promised, they could just offer smokers an empty plastic air flow improvement device to draw the smoke through with the promise that the cigarette will last the same, taste the same, be just as strong and cost the same but will be much less harmful.
