Here is a list of some possible roles that can be used in werewolf games or themed games in general,

List of roles can be used to help mods add roles to a game and can vary in description and name depending on theme and who is modding

If you have any suggestions to add to the list please come forward and i will add them to the list

Poisoner - you have access to Poison and Fake Poison. Players you target with this action will have their poisoned status announced at the beginning of the following Day. Poisoned players will die if they are not healed by the end of the Day, but Fake Poisoned players will survive either way.

Firefighter - Hose Down one player each night. Hose Down will protect your target from being doused in accelerant and protect them from being ignited.

Fool:The Fool is led to believe they are the Seer. Each night, when they choose to reveal a players role, they will be told a completely random role.

Vampire : Every night, the vampire kills someone expect the 3rd night when they are able to turn someone (non werewolf). The vampire is it's own team.

Vengeful Serial Killer: This SK is linked to a villager. When the villager dies, the SK gets an extra kill on his next munch.

    VARIABLE

Arsonist - Douse a target in accelerant that can be lit on any following night. Ignite will cause all Doused targets to catch fire, causing them to die at the end of the night unless protected by a Firefighter.

Assassin - If lynched, player who placed the last vote for them dies also

    Counterfeiter
    - Can choose a day to have access to all lynch votes in advance. Can fake lynch votes from players, whatever vote distribution they choose is what the village uses and knows of. Basically has total control over the lynch, get to distribute votes from whoever to whoever.

Charlatan - On the X Day, you must declare with certainty a Player to be a Werewolf.

Doppelgänger : Select a player the first night. If that player dies, you secretly take that role.

Drunk : You are a villager until the third night, when you remember your real role.

Ghost : A player with the Ghost role can continue to post in a game thread for two full phases after their death

Hateful Turncoat: his role would work with a Charlatan. The Charlatan would have to accused one person per day. If he accuses the Turncoat, the turncoat can then be activated and can choose his to stay good or turn bad.

Jack of All Trades - a combination of several of the above roles to be used on successive nights or lost.

Jailkeeper – Jail one player each night. Jailing another player will both protect that player from being killed as well as prevent that player from being able to successfully use their Night Action that night.

Jester - the Jesters sole purpose is to get lynched. If they can get lynched, they win

Suicide Bomber - You and the player targeted with your bomb will die within one minute after submission unless protected.

Tracker – Track a player each night. Tracking another player informs you who that player used a Night Action on that night, if any.

Universal Backup - Backup will allow you to inherit the powers of a dead player of the same alignment once in the game. You will inherit all of their abilities and modifiers. You will not inherit their chat access or player groupings (e.g. Masons). You will not inherit the original, unaltered versions of your modifiers. If your target has limited shots, the shots they used will already be used in your inherited role.

Voyeur – Watch a player each night. Voyeuring another player will inform you of the types of actions done to that player that Night, if any. You will not learn who used those actions. Some example types:
Killing: Factional Kill, Vigilante, Poisoner, Arsonist (Douse)
    Protection: Doctor, Bodyguard, Firefighter
Investigative: Full/Alignment/Parity/Role Cop, Tracker, Watcher, Voyeur, Motion Detector
Manipulative: Jailkeeper, Roleblocker, Framer, ITA Boost, ITA Nerf

Watcher – Watch a player each night. Watching another player informs you who used a Night Action on that player, if any. You will not learn what type of Night Action was used on your target.

Wild Child: on the first night the Wild Child chooses 1 "role model" if the role model dies the wild child becomes a werewolf until then the wild child is a normal villager

The scapegoat : If there is a tied vote and the scapegoat is still alive they are lynched.

Wanna add my necromancer team in Andy?

Also, roles can of course be invented by players, I made up this version of sheriff before I looked into other roles, while I didn't invent it it was original to me at the time of creation, as well as a full necromancer team/role. If you have a good idea, put it down and we can all help to make it balanced so its suitable for play.

Great list by the way, I've a few other roles on my PC I'll have a look at, see if you missed any

Couldnt sleep last night so was readinf Andys great post about roles then was thinking of a themed game something along the lines of slipping into parallel universes.

The game could start with 2 scientists and as long as they stayed alive we stayed on village 1 if one scientist died the game would slip into a parrell universe each night where the same roles would be randomly assigned each night. So oneday you could be a WW the next the seer.

If the 2nd scientist died I was thiking like QB said above any role could be assigned at random and we could enter worlds where the wws become the good team and village bad. Or anything really.

Probably be a bit crazy and needs a lot of ironing out but could be fun,
    Any suggestions welcome

Probably impossible to catch the wolves given their randomised each night? Also, so much work for the mods. Or do you mean than there's only two universe's.

Name the scientists Rick and Morty and the Universes Village A and Village 1.

Yeah I'll go find it when I take a break from my assignments.

Have we any other full team ideas? Ones that are more than just flavour on wolves

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,437 ✭✭✭tritium

Id been thinking about a villager team set. Something like the starks with an in built hero role. Basically any two could sacrifice themselves to prevent a munch or kill a random wolf, with possibly everyone left to figure which of the three was the wolf. Not sure how it would fit with balance though. Id called it illuminati for the moment...

    NECROMANCER

Give someone a Necromancer role from the start. They have 33% chance of raising a dead player. Upon the game reaching day 5 (or abouts), announce the skellys have risen. The priest picks one grave to visit during the day, can choose a skelly to kill at night, only if confirmed skelly. If the Necromancer is killed, they all die. The skellys get one chance to kill the priest, if they miss their identities are revealed and the Necromancer will hopefully be killed next. Allow priest to train an apprentice priest called the embalmer, he handles the dead bodies, and the exorcist, who aids him in skelly killing. They can both attack the Necromancer at any time, if they attack the wrong person, the priest dies, skellys must be rooted out one by one by exorcist. The exorcist can't check graves unless the priest has died. The Exorcist can only attack the Necromancer when there are no more Skeletons, as can the priest alone. Skeletons will not post in the game thread, they will have a separate chat with the Necromancer to confer on who they think the priest and Exorcist are. If the wolves try to attack Necromancer, one of them dies. If priest and exorcist are killed, then Necromancer wins.

Lynch votes are withheld until the Necromancer is dead. If the Necromancer receives the most lynch votes, the player with second most votes will be killed. This is why votes are withheld.

If anyone has balance or ways to simply please post or PM me. The point of the role is for wolves to try avoid the Necromancer and Priest until Necromancer is dealt with, so they'll be helping the villagers.

    RENEGADE

Can follow a player, if the wolves attack the followed player, they still die but one wolf at random is killed

    Detective

You old sleuth.. Each day, you will have the chance to investigate another player. Use this carefully however, for these is a 40% chance the werewolves will detect you!

    Hunter

A trigger happy, vindictive player. As the hunter, you try to keep to yourself. However, when others come to visit you, they may find themselves dead, as your paranoia takes hold and you shoot. If the wolves attack you, you have a chance to take one of them with you. Otherwise, if you die, you will get a chance to shoot someone as you die. Note: For wolf attacks, the chance starts at 30%. If there is one wolf, the hunter has a 30% chance to kill the wolf (and survive). For each additional wolf, add 20% (2 wolves = 50%, 3 = 70%, etc). However - if there are multiple wolves, while you may kill one of them, you will still be outnumbered and killed. If the cult tries to convert you, they have a 50% chance to fail. If they fail, you have a 50% chance to kill one of them!

    Serial Killer

That asylum was silly anyways. What a joke. You are free now however, back to business as usual - killing! The serial killer is a lone player, on their own team. They can win only if they are the last player alive (exception: lovers). As the serial killer, you can kill ANYONE - wolves, hunters, gunners, guardian angels, whatever. If the wolves try to attack you, you will kill one of them (random), and live.

    Bloodhound

Werewolf version of Seer, 20% chance of a check failing and 40% chance of being told a random other role (works out at 52% chance of getting the correct role)

An interesting role I just thought of was a Seer mirror. Someone who gets a PM every day with all the seer checks as they are done but has no say in who the seer checks. Could be interesting as they could either come out before the seer or verify the seer checks, but the team still only has one seer.

Dead room pro - We all know that the dead like to think they are so clever and can see things players in the live game can't, so to spice up the dead room you can give them one kill that they can vote on to use at a pre-designated time in the game. In order for this to work the dead can be given no hints or role reveals by the game mods.

Or a variation, the occultist, player who once per game can talk to the dead players and get a direction on the vote. Maybe like an ouija board can only ask a yes/no question or something

Or maybe allow one dead player to reappear in the village riding a dragon.....

No wait we kinda tried that, not so good...

    Carry on :pac:

I've played a few games with 2 seers, a drunk seer ( we called it something else, can't remember what) and a normal seer. Neither one know which they are as they will both be told they are a seer. The normal seer gets accurate information every night the drunk one gets a 50/50 chance of getting the correct information.

An ideathat popped into my head

The negotiator: the negotiator is playing on behalf of the bad teams. Once per round each bad team may give a message for another bad team to the negotiator. The negotiator is free to give or not give the message, or indeed to give a different message. The negotiator is known ro all bad teams and wins if any bad team wins the game.

I like that, I was jotting down ideas for my game and came up with something similar but I opted for someone with flexible allegiance, so they would have a better chance of credibility with whomever they were speaking to. Like a sycophantic sort who's loyal to whoever he speaks to at the time

Tally Captain (need a new name) - Can choose a day to have access to all lynch votes in advance. Can choose who the lynch victim is on this day, regular votes are posted afterwards.

Counterfeiter - Can choose a day to have access to all lynch votes in advance. Can fake lynch votes from players, whatever vote distribution they choose is what the village uses and knows of. Basically has total control over the lynch, get to distribute votes from whoever to whoever.

Tally Counter - Can see all lynch votes in advance on the day the Tally Captain/counterfeiter use their power. Cannot affect lynch result.

I'd give the village a Tally Captain and each Wolf team a Tally Counter, or else give the wolves a counterfeiter and the village two tally counters for balance, lynch would be too unreliable if Counterfeiter and Tally Captain in one game imo.

Just thought of something and wanted to note it down before I forget.

Something similar to the g3 or the previous group I had in the Game of Thrones game whereby a group of three non roled good players each know the identity of each other.

However, rather than them being able to communicate and fully know who they are, each will only know the name of one other good player.

    For example...

If the three players are Jayop, Tigger & Molly

    Jayop knows Tigger is innocent
    Tigger knows Molly is innocent
    Molly knows Jayop is innocent

It would be then up to them to try to figure out who the person they don't know is and to tell the person who doesn't know about them who they are.

For example should I signal Tigger in the game that I know him then he will know all three players. Then he can hint to me that Molly is good. I can then try to get Molly in on it.

I think it would add an interesting dynamic and you could have wolves faking it too.

A few random thoughts for my future games.

Allow the evil teams to write their own kill messages.
Allow comments in the vote form and print them with the votes.

Re kill messages. Barney surprised me whit the strawberry milkshake death message in WWX. He had effectively done what you suggest. And I thought it was class. Really added to the fun.

This is really, really complex as any of the people in the current Facebook game will tell you.

I don't recommend unless you build the game around it, it's too powerful to be a background threat, as was the intention.

Since the Marvel DC game Ive been thinking of roles. They may be half baked but I thought Id Throw them up here. Also these ideas may already be done. All names are awful.
    The Hateful turncoat-

This role would work with a Charlatan. The Charlatan would have to accused one person per day.

If he accuses the Turncoat, the turncoat can then be activated and can choose his to stay good or turn bad.
    The Drunk Wolf

The Wolf would have an ability but wouldnt know of the ability until 2nd or 3rd night
    The Siamese Soulmates

Both would be villagers who share a secret room. However if one dies, the other will also die.
    The Vengeful SK

This SK is linked to a villager. When the villager dies, the SK gets an extra kill on his next munch.
    The Sad SK -

This SK is linked to a villager , if the villager dies the SK loses his kill for the next Munch, however the SK also then becomes immune to 1 death blow.
    The Prodical Elder -

Works simplier to a regular Elder but if hes peeked he shows as bad.

Drunk Priest (would be suitable for a Wolfy priest) - Learns allegiance of dead players, if they had abilities and 1 or 2 of the roles they didn't have.

E.g. in Marvel Game, when Katie (Seer) died, drunk priest would have learned she wasn't Cap and wasn't Batman, but had a good role. When I died, they'd have learned Team MV, but not Loki.

Might lead to some awkward management and unnecessary spread sheeting though.

Guys didn't someone somewhere have a list of best numbers for balancing games? Like if there's 10 people you have 1 wolf, 20 people have 3 wolves etc?

Anyone know where that went to?

I found a spreadsheet that you can download where you input all your roles and it tells you the balance.

There's also a few systems where you assign a point for each NRV, and more for RV's and then deduct a fixed number of points per baddie. Ideally you want to get the balance back to 0. If you google how to balance a ww game there's millions of hits!

Vanilla IIRC is 3 - 4 goodies per baddie. Doesn't account for power roles though. I used a points based systems I found on the web like TB described, but found it lacking once you move away from "defined" roles like seer or bodyguard.

Yeah I googled it but most of the sites are blocked in work. For some stupid reason! Ffs.
