So what actually happened to 146?

As it says in the title, what actually happened to 146? I did a 1 day footplate course on her a few years ago, it was a little boys dream come true! When I rang up to do it again last year, they said they finished letting the public pay to drive her because of "the incident". Can anyone give a detailed account of what actually happened?

She basically had a crash and one of the cabs had to be fully rebuilt. You can tell which one it is from the repaint job despite it being very good and the fact the dayglow panels were not replaced.

You mean the old 146-gate story?

I could never actually find out what happened here. The whole thing was shrouded in secrecy and any time I enquired about it either here or over in The Graveyard (IRN) I was fobbed off and no-one would say anything other than that there was minor damage and it was being repaired. There was a report done by the ITG/DCDR but no-one will post even an excerpt of it and the whole thing and any discussion about it is smothered.
I was assured by one of the usual clique on IRN that anyone hoping for a nice juicy scandal story would be sorely disappointed. That statement can be taken 2 ways - 1. it was a mundane bump and of no particular interest or 2. there was some element of scandal/unauthorised movement/joyride by an unauthorised person but we're not going to hear of it because the whole incident has been covered up.

I don't expect that this thread will last long OP before things are smothered again.
The usual clique members in the heritage/preservation scene will ensure that. I know from experience that they have a Fort Knox mentality with regard to information.

^^The usual stock response to enquiries about 146.

We all know she had a crash and had a cab rebuilt. What people want to know is why the crash happened, who was driving and what were the circumstances surrounding the incident. And what I'd be particularly interested in is why there is such a level of secrecy about the affair?

A crash - a slight exaggeration. Why the effort to blow the incident out of all proportion? What is to be gained by raising this issue again except to titillate the gossip mongers. Anybody having to ask about the incident is obviously not actively involved in either the ITG or the D&CDR or they would know what happened.

^ more of it. You obviously know something Del Monte?
You'd get information out of the KGB easier that you'd get anything out of the ITG!

The reason people like to know is that they are enthusiasts and are stakeholders even if they are not paid up members of the ITG/IRRS/DCDR/ clique and like to know what is happening with preserved stock.

If theres nothing untoward and nothing to hide why don't they just come out and say what was involved in the incident.

Nothing would surprise me up there anyway, the whole operation is distinctly amatuerish what with things being left out in the open and there were allegations of metal thiefs enetering the site and interfereing with locomotives at one stage.

Nice try, but you won't be getting any information from me.

The sad thing is the footplate course was a really great attraction at the DCDR. It was very good value compared to similar events in the US. For example a 1 hour drive on the Western Maryland Railway costs upwards of $2,000 and a cab ride on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad would set you back $250.

I have heard it said in some quarters that certain people don't need to pay for courses to mess about on CIE locomotives. :pac::pac::pac:

All both groups are clearly doing is hiding their incompetence.

Right, well you've just given yourself away now, mate.

So you are saying that you do know something, but you're witholding?

Can't give something he doesn't have. Judgement Day was the only Wexford man I ever came across actively involved in Railway Preservation. What a legend.;)

Well I think he does know something. Look at the tone of his post.

JD would be even more of a legend if he came on here and gave an account of what happened on that day. He knows 100% for sure. I won't hold my breath though because he'd be one of the prime clique members.

I could have sworn this was all contained in a thread I closed for a very good reason.

When a thread is locked, it's not a good idea to open a new one about something contained with it..
