Hi folks. Would anyone be able to suggest a Laptop in the €800-€1000 range. Wouldn't be doing any major current gen gaming stuff on it. Just a couple of last gen games I'd say.

I'd recommend the HP 17-x062sa laptop
    It's 17.3"
    6th gen Intel i5 processor
    1TB HDD
    8GB RAM (DDR4)
    Amd Radeon R7 graphic card
    8 hours battery life

Its €849 in Currys reduced from €1,150 or on the UK website its £649.99 with the current conversion rates it makes it roughly €720, I don't know if they deliever to Ireland but if you were to get it even a trip up to Newry you would still be saving money even with petrol cost, hope that helps

Cheers for the reply mate. A 17 inch laptop is too big to be honest. I'm more looking for one with a 15 inch screen. Sorry I should have mentioned that in the opening post. Places like currys and pc world always seem to overcharge for junk as well. I was kinda hoping someone could recommend an online place to buy.

That HP would be poor value for money anyway, even last gen games wouldn't fare very well on AMD R7 graphics - they might sound good but they're incredibly weak. For your budget, a 14" ultraportable with a very solid GTX960M graphics card would be achievable - sail through last gen games at ultra settings, plays all the latest games at OK levels, in a slim, portable chassis. Check out pcspecialist.co.uk for example.

I'm not going to be much help on the technical end of things but I did a very careful shop for my last laptop and found laptopsdirect.co.uk was the best value. Their as-new stuff too, though I got a refurb for I think £450 down from £800 and it has been fantastic, may as well have been brand new. With the £££ sterling as it is now, I would highly recommend looking at UK retailers.

Also, this should help a lot as I just finished putting together (well, buying the parts for - still waiting on delivery) my first gaming PC and the whole 'CPU' and 'GPU' stuff can look confusing as nothing else. According to the lads on the 'PC building' forum (I think that's it) for games, your GPU is considerably more important than your CPU, if you have to choose one or the other.

Also not sure if it would be what you're looking for, but self building gaming PCs has a tonne of advantages. I went into the 'pc build' forum looking for laptop advise, and was advised for a bunch of reasons why a gaming PC is a much better option - there are a LOT of reasons.

I didn't want a full size PC since I wanted something portable and am moving countries also next year... but check out this case, if you do plan on going that way. Identical width/length as an A4 sheet of paper, and only an inch taller than one of the bigger smartphones standing up. Just something worth keeping in mind!

Thanks for all the replies folks. That pcspecialist place seems interesting. I'll have a poke around there. I've never heard of them before. Have they a decent reputation for build quality and whatnot?

Yeah thats true I was just checking out currys pc world, harvey norman and argos, I didn't really think about online places but I have heard that Elara are good for price if you want to check out them

My advice is do a little bit of research and know what specs are needed for your games and double it. so if the game requires 2gb ram then get at least 4, likewise 512mb gpu, get at least 1 gb. Wouldn't worry too much about storage but cpu power and family are crucial
