Aer Lingus Transatlantic Upgrade Auction

    Just wondering how this works.

After I booked a flight on the Aer Lingus website I got an E Mail inviting me to bid to upgrade to Business Class. The range of bid was for between €350 - €950. I put in a bid and just a couple of days before the flight told I was successful. It was a very nice flight!

My parents had booked a different flight on a different route (via New York) on the website but they didn't get an offer to bid for an upgrade.

I'm wondering is it normal to get an offer to bd for an upgrade or how do they decide?

Has anybody else bid for the upgrade and did you get it or not?

There was a previous thread on this somewhere.

I have used it a couple of times successfully (to New York)

I think with New York you generally will be successful, given the number of flights a day and likelihood of all business class on all flights being full.

Not sure why your parents did not get an email but you can also access it by logging in to "Manage my Trip" on Aer Lingus website and there is usually an option to Bid to Upgrade.

I've got this for a forthcoming trip via Boston.....as the Boston flight is not that long, I wasn't going to bother.....but maybe I'll give it a twirl nearer the time.

    yes

You have to remember that the full cost of business could be a 1,000 or even 2,000 on top of a one way fare

€410 one way going out and that was on top of the original fare. Came back economy - and that was hard!!

The bid range was €350 - €950 and you can only make one bid so I did well given that I bid at the lower end of the range.

The other thing was that because I was on a connecting flight (economy of course) I could still use the United Business Class lounge in Chicago - got more free food and another 2 drinks while I was waiting on that second flight.
