I'm 31 and haven't been to a dentist in over 20 years. I also have had poor dental hygiene and diet.

The result is my teeth are in an extremely poor state. I've lost a number of permanent teeth already, I have partially damaged teeth still in my mouth and generally just fear about how bad my teeth are.

I guess I'm starting this thread as im embarrassed by it all and if anyone has been in a similar situation itd be appreciated to hear your experiences.

I realize I need to change my dental hygiene habits as well as my diet and I've already cut out fizzy drinks and sugar snacks immediately and tomorrow Im arranging an appointment for a dentist check up to see just how badly damage my teeth are and what work can be done.

I went for the first time after 22 years. They said they have had people who have left it longer than that all the time. I'm kinda lucky I was never in dire need of one until I got an abscess and had to have one pulled.

I doubt you'll be the worst they see that day, so don't worry too much about that side of it.

You'll feel good that you started to sort it out.

Ask around for a kind empathetic dentist - patients like you present all the time.

Kilkenny. I already sent an email today to a dental practice looking to arrange a check up and I gave them the honest back ground.

TBH I'd understand if they gave me a lecturing as I've just taken a head in the sand approach to my dental hygiene until now but I'm realised I have an issue and hopefully this will be the first step towards resolving it though likely only after months or work.

I have had a number of patient that went for those periods between visits. No embarassment needed. Dentists dont mind people with teeth that need work, infact they will love you.

The fear of the dentist is common, it can easily be overcome through persistence, medication and a understanding dentist.

Good luck on your path to better oral health.
