I removed an old electric fire the was fixed to the wall and this is what's left behind https://i.imgur.com/Yx8cItK.jpg

Can I use filler on this wall or would I need to put thistle bond and then plaster, or any other suggestions?

Personally, id bond it, mesh it and plaster it. Best result IMO to ensure cracks dont show through.

Thanks. Where do you put the mesh, is it just around the edges?

Place the mesh over the cracks and plaster over. Id do it in 2 coats, a more liquid one for the second coat. Will ensure a better finish and result in thr crack not reappearing.
