    Morning all,

Current card appears to have given up the ghost (Ati Radeon HD 5850 1gb. PC boots but after a minute or two card fan goes into overdrive & black screen)

    System:

    Asus P7P550-ELX
    Intel i7
    12gb RAM
    700w PSU
    Win 10 Pro 64bit

No gaming but use a 3 monitor setup.

Advice on a suitable replacement that doesn't cost half the national debt would be greatly appreciated!

Whats your budget for a new GPU?

Can you borrow a GPU off anyone to test the issue is in fact GPU related?

If you're not actually using any GPU accelerated programs a basic €30-40 new card like the R5 230 or GT720 will be fine and drive 3 monitors.

Would also be totally silent, a quarter of the size and consume a fraction of the power the HD5850 uses.

Yeah, it boots with a different card installed.

Had budgeted around €150 - €200, I suppose a degree of future proofing would be no harm?

    Thanks

Future-proofing doesn't really apply to non-gaming or GPU accelerated uses - it would just be a waste of money to be honest. That HD5850 would have been expensive back in the day and if it was only ever used to drive multi-displays then it offered zero benefits over it's €30 variant at the time (HD5450), back then or now.

    Hmmm,

On impulse I put the 5850 back in with just one monitor connected on DVI. No problems.

Connecting all three - crash, either of the others separately with the DVI (playport & HDMI) crashes.

    Overheating?

All becomes clear after much fiddling & swapping..

    It was the PSU.

Replacement PSU in and all is well in the land of Bosh!

    Thanks all
