“Frequency” is based on the 2000 movie of the same name and centers on a police detective (Peyton List, “Mad Men,” “The Tomorrow People”) who discovers she can communicate via ham radio with her dead father (Riley Smith, “Nashville”).

It premiered last night in US

This was one of the new shows I was most excited about - thought Frequency was a great little film, and was interested to see how they'd adapt it for the small screen. It ended up being a lot stronger than I had thought it would be - Peyton List and Riley Smith were great in the leading roles and even the small introductions we had for the supporting cast showed promise.

You and JP Liz V1 were 2 minutes apart in creating a thread about the same show (US Pace too!) :p

Yep spotted that - about the time it took me to go find the trailer to post - I've asked the mods to merge them anyway... Bloody Typical :D

Ah sure, US Pace is the one to be at - not waiting around 2 years for the likes RTÉ or SyFy to pull the finger out and start showing it.

Really enjoyed the second episode as well - it's a shame it's not really hitting the average ratings for the CW, but then again ratings don't really dictate whether it gets renewed or cancelled on the CW, so hopefully it can garner a loyal fanbase and stay in the good books of the critics...

Yeah I loved the second episode too. The simple distraction in the past that changed the present was very clever. I love that kind of stuff.

Thought the pilot was pretty well polished, decent hook coming to it blind. I don't know the film. Did wonder a little about the 'we have to stop the thing - against the clock', maybe a blend of Awake and Early Edition. Perhaps Kyle Chandler will drop by. :P I'm little wary of the wounded detective combined with rescue of the week thing, but I'll give it a few more episodes. Will see how they balance messing with the space time continuum! Lead seems charismatic and empathetic. Second episode threw me a little. Not talking to her mother over the radio was quite irritating, tbh.

[...] Second episode threw me a little. Not talking to her mother over the radio was quite irritating, tbh.

It was a bit weird, but to be fair, her reasoning was sound enough given she quickly realised how easily the timeline got messed up by even the simplest action. Other characters in TV fiction ATM could learn a thing or two about that (not looking at anyone, BARRY ALLEN). It was cold on her part, but I appreciated her common sense.

I'm definitely another who has been quietly impressed with this; good cast (though some of the old age makeup is pretty bad), solid hook and a definitive enough premise that should mean the story stays focused and on-target.

The time-travel stuff is subtle but well handled too; I try not to think too hard about those sorts of plots because you'd otherwise drive yourself spare, but they seem to be sticking to their own internal logic, which is more important IMO than any physics based legitimacy or whatnot.

The time travel stuff was a bit silly in this one. I suppose we have to live with the two eras running side by side where something in the past will have an immediate impact on the present (rather than indirectly). Realistically, Raimy shouldn't have found Goff in the present.

While I agree, I'm willing to leave that particular logic at the door, since the past having an immediate impact on the future makes for more compelling viewing.

Super Mario reference and Goff almost got the Bauer treatment.

It seems to be using the same logic as the film Looper with changes in the past instantly changing the present. i'nm enjoying it so far but don't see how they keep it going for more than one season. It is enjoyable to have a CW show that doesn't have a heavy romance sub-plot. Aslo her neighbour comes across as super creepy.

Just watched it there. Thinjing the same as has been mentioned. Just in EP3. Why if effects are instant, did her bruised face not go back to normal! Considering the guy never existed, why did the bruises ! Enjoyable so far, glad it's released at US pace, none of this messing around crap waiting weeks or years !

^Thought I was the only one fixating on the fact that the bruises should've disappeared!

Might be intentional, in the same way that she has both versions of memories.

What's bugging me and maybe I missed it but where is her father now in the present timeline since he didn't die back in the past timeline.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,590 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

I think I remember hearing that he died in a car crash a few years ago....

Yeah, he died about 5 years before the present day the show's set in.

I'm following the timelines fine, the show itself is alright, if a little lacking.

Please someone ban from 'emotions cloud your judgement' from all cop shows, k? Of course Satch has half the case files in his man cave. Saying that, they do a good enough job on the emotional side.

I thought that was one of the weakest episodes so far. Hope next week is better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,590 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

I'm kind of getting bored now.

With 3 episodes left and no back 9 order, this will be left wide open.

    They're obviously telegraphing
    Gordo's father
as being the actual bad guy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,590 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

^^ Well I was wrong about that. :)

They could have removed the last scene from episode 12, spliced some of episode 13's scenes there instead and it would have been a self-contained series with 12 episodes and a proper ending.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Well the ending felt a little rushed, but methinks it was the writers reacting to the limbo of whether the show will get renewed or not. Thankfully they at least wrapped things up relatively satisfactorily, while leaving some trailing ends that could be picked up on, were a season 2 to be commissioned.

In the end I thought this was a decent little show: well structured, some half decent characters & arcs (although Raimy could be a little too bullish and impulsive by half), and kept its single mystery ticking along at a decent pace throughout. The time travel mechanics were solid and consistent within their own internal logic as well, which helped suspend disbelief.

Pity, was a decent little show that kept its feet on the ground despite the premise. At least the main story got wrapped up reasonably well in the end.

a proper ending has been released to finalise the show

That was so good. 3 minutes long but perfectly done.
I wish more bubble shows had the foresight to do something like this.

    Something in my eye. *sniff*

That was a nice & succinct capper on the series; if the stars align & schedules allow, more cancelled shows should definitely do that sort of thing; if nothing else it maintains goodwill with fans & viewers alike.
