Circuit Court 'Appearance Fee'

Happy to be corrected here and also told to mind my own business but I think it's an interedting discussion to have.

IIRC an intital district court appearance is €250 split between the barrister and solicitor and the subsequent appearaces €50 split. Is this about right. And before anyone thinks jaysus a plumpber makes less than that - that's before tax!

What is the fee structure for the CC?

I realise this might be a touchy subject but I'd love to see some of the myths dispelled about how much people are actually paid in the legal profession.

Is this relating to criminal legal aid? I don't know how much it is but it is definitely criminally low.

On the civil side, there is a supposed minimum appearance fee of €125, which is supposedly for a consent adjournment application but I doubt anyone has ever actually received such an ephemeral amount.

    Thank you both.

@GM228 those two documents are going to receive an unusual amount of careful attention from me in the coming couple of days!

A rather uncalled for and slightly begrudging gibe.

    Bust would be my guess.

Ah the recently reg'd comedians and their little thanksers. At least 4ensic15 can read a piece of legislation and forward a cogent argument.

The 200 euro brief fee for criminal DC work is not split like that. A barrister earns €25 for per remand, €50 for a plea of mitigation and €67 for a hearing.

The CC criminal rates are set out as per the DPP directions on a brief with a usual 20% professional tax deduction.

In privately funded matters in criminal and in civil it is at the discretion of the barrister as to what they charge for a brief fee and for additional work such as motions, drafting, consultations etc.

As with any specialised service, barristers are highly skilled and have particular expertise which members of the general public may require, some more specialised expertise than others. Most barristers will set out to a solicitor what they are likely to charge in any event.
