Started to notice a whistle for the first time this morning. It does not seem to be based on revs.
    Turbo issue?
Any know what the best course of action is?

    Thanks

Okay now I am getting a rattle to go with the whistle.
I am thinking it could be the dreaded N47 timing chain issue.

Yeah it's been a hot topic here in the last few years

There's loads of old threads about it

I called my local BMW dealer and they will take it for a diagnostic check on Monday (€130).
Does anyone have any idea what the whining/whistling might be.

I am not sure about the rattle - I could just be paranoid.

If you are lucky, it might just be an exhaust clamp. Had a few come loose on E60 and F10 models. Vibration might be a little like a whistle to begin with?

Brought it to local garage (not BMW) and he reckons its the turbo

Yeah when the bearings are worn enough it can cause the turbo to give off a whistle sound, especially noticeable when accelerating through the gears.

Can you record a video of the sound? Maybe it's just a simple boost leak?

Just to follow up on this - It did require a turbo replacement. It sounds quiet again so not worried about the chain (for now!).

As part of the job they carried out an oil change and oil filter change. In order to complete a service what are the other jobs need to be done on a diesel service?

Just wondering if these are things that I can complete myself....

    Air filter change interval

    Fuel filter change interval
up to 2009/02 with each 3. engine oil change
from 2009/03 with each 2. engine oil change

    Brake fluid change interval
    every 2 years

Engine oil and filter change interval

    Interior filter change interval
up to 2007/02 according to service display

    Thanks Shiet

Might just bring it back to the garage - not sure about evert=ything here and should probable ensure a full diagnostic is done before considering a service is complete

All you really need is an air filter, pollen filter and fuel filter. The air and pollen (cabin) filter should be handy to do yourself. The fuel filter might be a bit more tricky.

Why are you getting a full diagnostic done? You don't need it unless there's something wrong with the car.

Ignore the bmw recommended oil change....get it done every yr or 10000 miles. It prolongs the lifespan of the timing chain.
